RS Clutch report!

I picked the car up on Friday after having the LWF and RS clutch fitted. Trying to manouver/reverse out of Autobahns carpark was a bit scary-the pedal action is so light now.

First impressions driving along the A45 in Coventry - the car is transformed. Instant response when blipping the throttle. The redline comes up quicker on the tach. The clutch bite is a little sharp in traffic, but that's more to do with me than the car. There's a running in period with a new clutch anyway.

After about two hours driving, I suddenly remember, "there's supposed to be more gearbox noise isn't there? Where is it?" So I put the car in neutral, and let out the clutch. Can't hear anything.... Shut of the blower and radio, and closed the sunroof. Concentrate....ahh there it is. Sounds kind of like rolling a marble across a wooden table. Pretty faint though really...

The engine fires up much more quickly, and there's no rattling/shaking when you turn the ignition off.

Absolutely NO stalling problems either.

That's it really. If you need to replace your clutch - and especially if you need the new flywheel-you'd be mad not to go for it for the extra few hundred quid it costs!

the 'coffee grinder' noise is especially noticable when the car is really hot - only at idle out of gear with your foot off the clutch - sounds quite good IMO ;-)

yep definately worth the dosh - stalling is only ever in winter with lights, heater, stereo etc on when the engine is cold - easy to drive around anyhow

LWF/RS clutch? IMO, the best performance upgrade for the P's with a DMF.

Magic!

As my so called new clutch has exploded after only 1000 miles of dull motorwat driving, I may have to consider this option from your reports. Can you let me know the price difference between the two if thats not being rude.

Cheers

Are you serious? Only 1000miles out of a new clutch?
.....

Anyway:

A normal replacement clutch is about £800(+VAT).

The RS version is about £500 extra, and this includes the lightened RS flywheel.

Bear in mind, that even with a normal clutch replacement, the flywheel sometimes needs to be replaced too, and the normal DMS flywheel is actually more expensive than the RS type....

Hope that helps you to decide! :)

My clutch is due for renewal soon - is this RS flywheel conversion worth doing with a turbo. The car is already pretty responsive on the throttle, I wouldn't want it to be any more "nervous" than it is already.

Thanks for your help and yes 1000 miles i all I got out of the clutch. I am having another specialist look at it and write a report as I suspect there may have been shoddy work involved here. Not happy. But if I need a new one I may as well make it a good one then. Do they last well......well more than 1000miles Ha Ha.
