Paint problems...

About 8 months ago I rather stupidly let Chips Away try and repair a small mark on my rear bumper....mistake number one.

After two failed attempts I decided that enough was enough and sent the car to a well known body shop to have the damage put right (at my cost). Now the rear bumper looks fantastic and I am happy, but at the same time I thought it would be a good idea to have the stone chips removed form the front bumper...mistake number two!

The bumper has now been painted three times and they are really struggling to match the colour (the car is 03, Seal Grey in A1 condition apart form the bumper!). There are three known matches for Seal Grey and the colours all seem too light/not right. To be fair the bodyshop have even had Dupont out to look and they agree the colour match is pretty awful and have subsequently remixed paint to try and obtain a better match to no avail. The latest attempt was using the original manufacturers paint (water based) and this too is not a good match. The problem is made worse because I own a printing company and can spot colour differences form a mile off (although the bodyshop are agreeing they are struggling here).

Now they have suggested that the only way I am going to be happy is to have the bumper, complete bonnet and wings blended in the nearest available match. Hopefully that way you won't see the hard line and colour difference where the bonnet and wings meet the bumper. Of course, this would not be cheap (they expect me to contribute here) and I am reluctant to start painting perfectly good paintwork.

I must stress that the workmanship of the bodyshop is NOT in question here, and in fact they have been incredibly professional and accomodating in the way they have handled this matter.

The colour miss-match is noticable from the sides and from the front, being too light from the sides, dark from the front.

I have had a look at second hand Boxster and 996's at OPD's and to be fair some seem to have a similar problem. I have been told that Porsche even have problems painting Seal Grey...is that true?

I really wish I hadn't had the stupid idea in the first place and wince every time I look at the car. I spent two hours polishing it tonight only to stand back and place my head in my hands.

I would like to take it to another bodyshop locally (West Sussex) but I don't know any reputable ones - any ideas?

Am I being too picky here, should I just drive it and get on with it or is it the bodyshop, what should I do?

Any good bodyshop would match the colour that your car is rather than just stick on seal grey.

When I had my splitter and spoiler painted we found that the original colour was out a fraction. it was then a case of getting the colour swatches and finding what gave an exact match. For me it was not a Porsche colour that came closest, can't remember what it was.

The shop I used then mixed the colour, a small amount initially just to check that it was a perfect match.

Interesting tale. Lesson: avoid Seal Grey? Sorry I can't offer any practical help.

I'd certainly not go down the route of painting the whole front. I suspect even then with your keen eye you would spot the difference.

I would just keep painting the front bumper until you are satisfied.

I'd also suggest it is the bodyshop's job to get the colour match right.

Just a thought- is it possible that the car's bonnet is a slightly different colour to the side panels, hence the single PU panel looks too light from the sides and too dark from the front?

Robert.

I went to a local Authorised Porsche bodyshop this afternoon and showed them the car. The have agreed that the workmanship is fine, but the colour match is poor and painting it 50 times may never resolve the problem.

In their opinion the only way to go forward is to either leave it and live with it (I can't do that I'm afraid) or to have the bumper blended into the front wings etc.

The only way I think I'll be happy is to go down that route. I Just wish I'd never started the whole bloody process!

I'll approach the bodyshop again and report back. May be a month or two though as I want to enjoy the good weather!

Will the new paint not 'weather down' to a match after a few months of road use? Colour matches on resprays are often difficult because the original colour has faded on bold-coloured cars / grubbied on light cars / flattened on metallic cars - admittedly this is usually an issue on 10-year-old red Escorts, but it could be a factor on your Seal Grey 911.

Just to rub salt into the wound I have now curbed one rear wheel quite badly whilst driving out of a tight car park...seems that it isn't my week!

Fortunately Porsche are re-furbing the wheels under warranty so I'll keep quite and have it repaired FOC...

The front end if my 993 Polar Silver is different to the rest of the car. Only way to make it match is to fully spray the front end & blend into doors. OPC want £2500+. So I'll drove the thing until the front end looks like its been blasted by a shotgun. So, if you can, live with the problem - sod law states as soon as you get the bumber matched it'll get stone chipped / damaged anyway.

The story has now moved on.

I have had advice from another paint shop and the work is perfect...but not a match. It also will never be so I have negociated that the front of the car will be blended in for about a quarter of the normal cost.

The is may not be everyones idea of the correct decision but as I intend to keep the car for a couple more years I think it is the best way to go. The paint shop is a Porsche approved one so no problems with the job either. Yet again, the owner has proved to be very professional and on the customers side and bent over backwards to help.

I would like to say again this is NOT a workmanship problem, but a genuine paint problem made worse with a fussy customer!

The car is going in during early July and i'm sure the news will be positive!

My general feelings about paint shops is they aint very good.

Maybe the job is too tough. I appologize to any good ones out there that I dont know about. I suspect there are some professional small outfits somewhere.

Vauxhall cacked up a Calibra.

Porsche cacked up a 928 (stay away from the OPC Swindon paintshop btw).

Obviously when the problem is a paint bubble, the answer must be a stone chip.

A quick update...

I picked up the car today having had the front PU, bonnet and wings blended to the nearest matching Seal Grey available and it looks fantastic!

The car matches from whatever angle you look at it from and the paint shop could not have been any more helpful. If you want decent bodyshop in the Reading area I cannot recommend Specialised Paint highly enough. As I have said before this is not a paint shop problem but a fussy customer problem.

At the same time Porsche paid to have my wheels re-furbed under warranty and the car now looks like new again.

Good news! I feel your pain - close isn't close enough! If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost? My local OPC charges GBP 500 just for a bumper to be repainted!

I originally paid £250 for the front PU.

To be honest we came to an agreement and it would be unfair to quote the amount of money I parted with on Friday. Let's just say that I paid about £1500 LESS than I should have done to have the entire front of the car sprayed and blended etc. They wanted a happy customer and that's all that mattered to them.

I have cleaned it today and it is spotless and the shine is amazing.
