Not sure if this should be posted under general chatter section...

Hi

Well I have decided to take a break from 911 land for a while hence I'm going to sell my 996 Turbo, since I'm not part-exing it the official dealers are offering what I would consider silly money. Any advice on where to sell? I know I can do it here and probably will, but I'm wondering given its price (Mar-03 car with 450bhp option) if there are that many people who would but it without dealer finance.

I tried to sell my wifes car on Exchange & Mart a few months ago and just got people trying to pull the "I'll give you more than it is worth" scam :(

Any advice or experience appreciated.

You could always try selling through a broker. Havn't done it myself so not sure what margin they take, but in theory they deal with Joe Public on your behalf whilst it sits on thier forecourt.

What's the 'I'll give you more than it's worth' scam?

It's that old scam where they offer to give you more than it's worth :D

Well, it's Friday.

Does anyone have any experience of or know of any Brokers that have done a good job? Thanks, Peter

Only ones Ive dealt with were at Formula Fuchs in the Midlands and Classic Chrome in SW14, both specialise in older cars, and I was approaching them as a buyer not a seller. Sorry...

Some Porsche independents will sell your car on your behalf, eg Northway. Worth ringing around?

I tried to sell mine privately with no luck. eventually gave it to Autobahn in Coventry - agreed a price they would give me for the car, and they took care of valeting it, and advertising. They were decent to deal with and seemed honest enough. Also spoke to RSJ sports cars, who were prepared to sell for a £2k + VAT charge. That's on a £36k car though, so don't know if there'll be a premium for a higher value model.

Sale or return at a dealer is good (esp with a high-value car like a 996TT) as they display and valet the car, do the adverts, test drives, Insurance etc, and can offer finance and PX. So you don't have to waste time showing your car to assorted scamsters and test pilots. You will end up, after costs, with at least what you'd get from a private sale with minimum hassle.

FWIW I'm paying someone around £5k to sell a £58k Ferrari, that £5k includes their costs and profit.

"The more than its worth" scam involves (I think) someone from overseas ringing you to say they want your car and will pay the asking price, but they owe someone else in the UK some money, so if you'd be so kind and to do them a favour could they pay you extra into your account and then you pay the the third party the surplus. So, the money arrives in your account, you pay the surplus as agreed to a third party, then as if by magic, the original sum disappears from your account as it is not cleared and you've been had... There may also be a simpler version where you get more than its worth deposited into your account, and you hand over the car which then disappears along with the money from your account. Alternatively, you give your account details, and your account is simply emptied or your identity stolen...
