Hi there

As seen in another post im after my first 911, i listened to all the great advice on which model to go for and i took that advice and started looking at 3.2 models.

The problem is all the cars i have looked at are poor examples and that condition is not reflecting the price, am i expecting too much. Or is it at the first glimmer of sun all the rubbish cars flood the autotrader etc.

Well anyway looking through the for sale pages im seeing more and more 964 cars that are entering my budget, i know they are said to have problems but can anyone tell me what they are and approx figures to put right if they go wrong please. What i am thinking is that if i were to buy a 964 over a 3.2 what i would save in rust and paint repairs could be spent on running an 964?

Anyway its just a thought and i would be grateful for your comments

many thanks

Russell

Finding a good 3.2 carrera is a long and winding road - dont give up so soon.

There are plenty of good 3.2's for sale here in CH, but i guess you dont want LHD ?

Lets get this bit out of the way first.

Everyone will tell you to get a car inspected before you buy anyway so any offer must be subject to inspection and this will go a long way to protecting your interests (even at £250 a time).

Use an acknowledged expert or specialist and ask for an informal report as sometimes this will include opinion that few will commit into print.

Autotrader would be where I would look first. Try Porsche Post (available to members from Porsche Club GB) and specialist magazines such as 911 World and GT One. I'd say that most of these magazines are read by enthusiasts and in general, you should find most of these are more honest about their cars, sometimes because they simply can't stop talking about them.

As Warren says, finding a "good" 3.2 could be a challenge simply because the last of them will be getting on for 15 years old now. But they will be out there depending on how much money you have to spend.

I don't have any personal experience of 964 ownership because, as you will see in other threads, I was put off buying one. But they are beginning to look like bargains compared with the 993 and benefit from engineering 3.2 owners would dream of. Shame about the engines, oil leaks etc but an insection and a good service history will show whether these have been attended to.

Buy from a decent dealer and get a years warranty and I suspect, providing you don't experience a major failure, the running costs will be far less than the depreciation costs on a new car, whatever the badge.

And there I do speak form experience!

Yes, what Anthony has said is spot on.

Can I suggest you start where I did by arranging a visit to specialists Paul Stephens (01440 414884)
www.paul-stephens.com
. as he is based not far from you near Sudbury.

His knowledge, honesty and experience will set you on the right path, even if you don't purchase a car from him.

There was a great buyers guide in 911 & Porsche World for the 964 last year- available as a back issue. Also, Peter Morgan has published a buyers guide book. I'd not let the doomsayers put you off- if a 964 has had all the engine work done, I see no reason why it should be any worse than any other 911.

I'd recommend looking at ads in the Porsche Post (the Porsche Club GB mag), 911&PW and GT Purely Porsche.

Russell, do not rush in and get the first 911 you see like everyone else has said first thing PPI. I have been looking for over two years for a 911/930 turbo black 87-89 had five PPI's done. So called good ones people asking silly money, because of the badge on the front of the car. Take your time and get the right one better, to lose a few hundred pounds then thousands on the wrong one.

You will enjoy the car more knowing that you got the right one and have peace of mind thanks to a PPI.

SEE YA
