This is some information I thought some of you might be interested in for diagnostic's and (perhaps) for trackday use. A while back Sundeep asked about an OBD reader that worked on 993's for diagnostic's and re-setting the Check Engine light. I happened to be discussing the same type of thing with a friend whos an eletronic engineer [and all round propeller head] and he gave me something a kin to a blue plastic chip called, "DriveRight CarChip [E/X]" see picture. Which he'd got off a web site in the US. This thing really has all the functionality I could think you might need.
For example: At the time I was having trouble with my 97 993 under heavy acceleration, the check engine light was coming on all the time and basically scaring me! After plugging this thing in, it has a heart beat as it sync's itself to your car. After that I unplugged it from the car and into my PC. Using the software provided it correctly diagnosed an alert "Misfire on cylinder 4". How do I know it was correct? I took the car down to Autofarm the following week and they plugged their offical diagnosis machine into the car and it reported the same info. The chip didn't report back warning's like the offical Porsche machine, but did cover the alerts. Which I didn't think was bad since the reading at the specialist costs you about £50.
The chip can recognise different car's by VIN number so it can record multiple trips from different vehicles without deleting it's memory. I tried it with our Audi TT as well and it holds both cars data no problem.
No here's the interesting bit, if you leave it hooked up to your car it samples the car's data every 5 seconds and you build up a picture of your entire journey including measurements like G-force under braking and acceleration. This apparently was developed for American's who didn't trust their kids to look after the family station-wagon when they took it to the local mall! You set your to tolerances of certain "bands" e.g: 0.5g = heavy braking, 1.0g= extreme braking. And the trip can be mapped [graph] and a report shown of how many times it happened. This can be done for a number of parameters like engine load, throttle position [% open], RPM etc...
The E/X version should have enough memory to record about 300 hrs of engine/trip data.
So if anyone is looking for something like this I would really recommend this item, it does work for 993's and I know it doesn't work for Cayenne's. I've not tried it in a 996 yet, but it should work.
