993 radio reception

I've read that radio reception on 993s is less than good.... I find that my (original, I think) Sony radio won't hang on to Radio 4; it goes on auto-seek to find a station with a decent signal.

Is this a problem that a different (newer?) radio might solve or is it the screen aerial and just one of the pleasures of 993 ownership?

Can anyone recommend a good ICE specialist in or around a reasonable radius of High Wycombe/Aylesbury?

I have been through this exercise without acheiving any improvement. The screen ariel system is useless. In fact the whole ICE in the 993 is pretty poor.

There is a arial booster under the dash which is sometimes disconected. I have had mine reconnected and put a good quality Alpine head unit in. Still no better. I also upgraded the speakers as the originals are cardboard Nokias that are rubbish.

My advise is to put in the best speakers and head unit that you can afford and just listen to all those CD's you never get round to listening to at home.

Alternatively, the engine makes a pretty good noise.

Jonathan, can I ask why you are selling your 993 soon?

It does seem as if the 993 crowd have itchy feet and always seem to be willing to sell their 993's.

The truth is that I was offered a very reasoable sum of money for it at the PCGB bash at Brands Hatch. This got me thinking about what the my next Porsche might be. Since then I have been looking at various different options as to what I might buy next.

As yet I am a little undecided and will only part with the 993 once I have another car lined up.

I see 4 chocies then Jonathan

1. Another 9932. 996 with 993 engine (Turbos etc)3. 996 without 993 engine4. Not a Porsche

Which would it be?

Would you risk option 3?

Sorry to be nosey.

a RADIO unit with a 2 RDS tuner helps......

e.g. Becker Traffic Pro's are excellent and make an improvement but obvious cost a bit too and still could be better !!

You have pretty much sumed up how broad my thinking currently is. Which is why I am still quite away from norrowing my search.

1 Would have to be one of the rare models - RS, good Turbo4 or TurboS?

2 Turbo or Mk2 GT3

3 Never!

4 Maserati 4200 GranSport - very excited about this car, but think the sensible way to buy one will be in about a year when they have taken a hit on the depreciation front.

Hey, we could be getting somewhere here, keep the 993 for another year and then buy the Masser.

This is good thearpy, my psychotherapist will be very pleased.

See the thread on 996 FM reception. I've got a Road Angel. Could this be something to do with poor R4 (sorry, but there's some good stuff on there) reception?

When I had my first 993 it was imported and had a small aeriel at the baack of the roof and I got great reception.

My current 993 did suffer until I fitted a Sony Sat Nav unit where I have v good FM but dodgy MW. May think about fitting a beesting a la 968 at some point.
postamble();

I get a lot of interference from my Road Angel which is more noticeable on the talk radio stations e.g LBC than it is on the music radio stations. The further you move it from the centre of the screen, the better is the reception.

I'm getting to grips with the radio and stuff. I think I was over-anxious re the radio and R4 reception: did a 120 mile round trip yesterday and all was fine. The Road Angel receiver is on the extreme LH corner of the dash.

I can happily live with things, I think (especially when I get round to working out how to get rid of traffic flash interruptions... (More study of radio handbook needed.)

But thanks for the suggestions, guys.

What is it with those traffic announcements on car radios?
When driving round town it cuts in every few minutes with about 3 seconds of pirate disco music.

Then when on the motorway it frequently interrupts something I’m really listening to with some local radio jackass telling me what’s on his show today (not traffic news at all).

But the best is when you grind to a halt on the motorway and you’ve just passed an exit.
You are then told that there is a major problem and you should avoid the area at all costs – too late, Doh!
