Shocker tops

Hi all,

The creaking I hear at low speed on my 996 C2 has been diagnosed as worn shocker top bearings.

I've been quoted over 500 quid to put this right and I'm wondering whether I should bother.

Does anyone know if the worn bearings are a potential danger? Should I just live with the slight creaking sound?

Thanks,

Andy

I had a creak / rattle that was coming from the front offside suspension over bumpy roads and only when the car was warm. I eventually spent a fortune with dealers and specialists trying to diagnose it as it was really annoying.

A Porsche OPC quoted for strut top bearings and shock absorbers, but the problem was eventually rectified by a specialist with a replacement lower suspension arm. The bush was worn slightly and this was the rattle / creak. Also check the drop links which are quite a common replacement.

Regards,

B

Thanks for the reply Barry.

Do you think the car is potentially dangerous with the creak or could I leave it?

I've apparently got slight wear on the drop links too but have been quoted another 500 pounds plus to replace these.

How much did it cost to replace the suspension arm?

Does anyone know of any non OPC specialists in the Wiltshire area please?

Thanks, Andy

Hi

996 drop links are pence...if I can remember less than £60.00 the pair and are easy to fit. ..approx 15/20mins per side.

£500.00 someone's pulling your pud!!!!

Hi,

As per Peter re the drop links for the 996. I paid £100 for the suspension arm from a specialist although the OPC were adamant it was the strut top bearing or the shock itself.

Not sure about the safety issue with a worn strut top but I'd get it checked by a specialist just in case it's not actually the strut top bearing. Definitely get it done by a specialist rather than OPC though otherwise I think you'll end up paying a fortune with no definite way of knowing it will fix the problem.

Regards,

Barry
