Have been spinning the rears alot lately, so thought I would check the tread depth on my conti's. Bad news, rears are 1.6mm and fronts are 4mm.

The tyres are all N1 rated.

The question is this, can I change the rears only, and if so can I put Michelin Pilot Sports 2's N3 rated on or would I need to put the newer N3 rated conti's.

Or would it be sensible to change all four?

I know what a tyre shop would say;)

If I mix N ratings and have an accident would the Insurance company use it as a reason to get out of paying up?

Help appreciated as ever?

I used to have p zeros all round although the previous owner must have had a puncture as one of the rears was n1 the other n3.I didn't realise this until i'd had the car 3 months.I have to say I didn't consider the Insurance and anyway I now have michelin on the rear and bridgestone on the front. The grip is better but thats because i was so used to my knackered pirellis. But if you do buy new shop around £600 for was the cheapest quote but I eventually bought part worn on alloys the same size 225-40-18 and 265-35-18 so i have a spare set for trackdays look on ebay or dare I say pistonheads

Poon, all I can suggest is that every time this quesiton pops up on any forum the same answer comes back 99% of the time: "never mix treads - this leads to unpredictable handling"

As for Insurance, I assume that as long as all tires are roadworthy, all N-rated, and the two fronts match, as well as both rears matching, that should be enough.
