CLUTCH NOISE ON 3.2 CARRERA

Can anybody throw any light on my clutch noise on a 88(f)3.2 carrera G50 box. When you depress the clutch pedal all the way to the floor it seems to baulk and grind ,even when in neutralIf you only press the clutch pedal 3/4 of the way down there are no strange noises! The car had a clutch at 80k and its now done 109k.

Any ideas!!!!! Cheers Andy Pritchard.

andy,

does it change without problem? could be a diaphram issue, but i'd get it looked at by a specialist.

Thanks Adam'

It changes gear perfectly, the noise is only there if you depress the clutch all the way to the floor in neutral and then you can hear a grinding noise which if you release the clutch slightly goes away!I have owned and worked on lots of cars in my time and have never come across this sort of problem before. If you drive the car without fully depressing the clutch it is fine, but if you drive it and fully depress the clutch it makes the noise. It seems to me that the clutch hydraulics are actually moving the clutch release arm too far, somehow.Very puzzled!!!! Anymore ideas very welcome.

try clutch release bearing - but lets face it - get the clutch out!

Andrew, do you know if the car had the G50 cross-shaft update kit fitted when the clutch was done? The shaft which runs through the clutch fork & runs on needle roller bearings, which have a tendancy to rust/bind and wear the shaft. There was a factory upgrade for this which should always be done (if it hasn't already) when the clutch is changed. Mine had similar symptoms to yours, although not as bad by the sounds of it, and when I pulled it apart the cross-shaft was knackered.

The release bearing generally only gets noisy on idle, and as soon a the clutch is pressed the noise goes away.

Cheers Nathan,Yes the car did have some kind of mod on the clutch actuation arm when it went to Autobahn at Coventry for a new clutch, which was in 98 i believe, before i owned it.I think i will see what they actually did when the clutch was changed. Thanks Andy P.
