any help appreciated.

i have a 3.2 carrera 1985 which has been running great. a couple of weeks ago it dropped onto 5 cylinders. changed the plugs, cap etc and it seemed fine until thursday when it did it again. problem is it smelt a bit fuelly and then it dropped the same cylinder (the one on the offside nearest the bulkhead). i've changed the plug for one of the old ones (cleaned up) and it's fine again. have i got a problem or have i just been unlucky with a new plug?

i had been running with air filter out for a few days whilst the new one arrived (the old one was black)

sounds a bit too coincidentle to me!

any previous experiences anyone??????

Try checking fuses for corosion - strange things on my 3.2 - like occasionally starting on 4 cylinders until warm - were cured instantly by replacing all under bonnet bullet fuses and any in the rear - which costs a trivial amount as a first step. Also check battery terminals for good contact.

Ensure that there are no tracks in the distributer cap and that the rotor arm is renewed. Clean terminals inside the cap also affect performance.

If that doesnt work get an auto electrician to check the plug lead for the offending cylinder. Then get a compression test on that cylinder.

Never run an engine without an air filter!!!! - one hundred yards on a dusty road sucks all that dust straight into the bores - fancy a rebore and new rings to add to your problems??

any consolation, got my SC back from workshop (new clutch)

after being parked up for over a month, and it has developed a mis'fire on #1 have tried replacing just that cable but problem persists, v annoying there appears to be a spark, there is fuel at the injector and it now smells rich, un-burnt fuel i expect will look at fuses, as experience has shown, many probs with cars, are electrical where you might otherwise think mechanical, oh and will check battery, as that will have been disturbed by mechanic

My '82 SC is running on five also. I've cahnged the lead, the plug etc on the offending cylinder. there's no crack in the cap, (but that's the next step - change the cap) I can here the spark going to earth but can not see it. I'm baffled. It doesn't make sense that the new lead didn't work with a spark being generated unless the problem is in the cap. I hope.

To eliminate a plug and lead, try one from a cylinder that is firing well, it just gets rid of any nagging doubts about faulty parts.
