Looking to buy a 996 - Help required!

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum and am looking for some help before purchasing a 996. I was looking at either a late 993 or early 996 and have decided on the later as I am looking to use the car on a daily basis and although I want a 'real' drivers car like the 993, I think that the 996 will suit me better for my long commute.

I have been searching many garages websites to find a suitable 996 and have come across a 98/S in Scotland with 29,000 miles for 36,995. I've checked in parkers and that appears to be a good price. Is there anything that I need to check / be aware of when looking over the car?? Its from a 'sports car specialist' who stock all makes not just Porsche, so I am looking for a PPI before I buy. Do I just ring Porsche to arrange? Do they go out to the car of do they have to bring the car to a local Porsche dealer?

Please help!!!

Cheers guys!

:)

There's nothing wrong with using a 993 as a daily commute if its m'way miles but through town the heavy clutch might become tiresome although there is always the tiptronic. 996 are generally easier to drive and as far as I'm aware there is nothing to worry about just watch out for damaged repaired jobs. Try them both first as they are superb in different ways but the 993 is better IMHO

Hi James

I am afraid I don't know a great deal about the 996 specifically but as bellies mentioned I don't think there is anything specific to worry about. The price you mentioned sounds good although it sounds like a long journey to have a look/pick it up. While getting a PPI done is definitely the right thing to do personally I would want to have looked at the car before buying it (as well as getting a PPI).

Re the PPI you can call up the nearest Porsche dealership and they should be able to collect the car, take it to their premises and go the necessary checks. You will need to get the vendor to agree to the PPI first though. Should cost somewhere around £130 depending on what they include in the check.

I know there is at least one guy on the 964 Rennlist group who lives in Scotland - goes under the name of Roygarth or something similar. Might be worth posting a request on Rennlist to ask if anyone could go and have a look at it for you.

Good luck, James

Thanks Guys,

I've gone for a '96 993 from a Porsche Garage, so it give me some peace of mine and also the 'drivers car' that I believe I wanted!

That was quick - when do you pick it up.

Good choice, by the way!

I've gone for a Midnight Blue with Marble Grey leather and Tip box.

It's at the other end of the country to me, but I've seen the photos and it looks good. I'm trying to sort out some flights now, then I'll go up, take a look and if its as good as they say then I'll drive it home.

Well chuffed!!

Congratulations. Midnight Blue looks great too. Are you going to have a PPI done on it or are you going to rely on a waranty? For a hundred quid I would get it checked over by another dealer or local specialist.

Apparantly they do a 87 point check which is better than the PPI (or at least that's what the Porsche Sales guy told me). It will come with a full one year warranty, its got low miles so I think that I should be OK (fingers crossed).

I've currently got a Honda S2000 and am a member of the UK owners forum who have regular meets. Is it the same with 911's???

There are a number of "owners clubs", the main ones of which are the official Porsche Club Great Britain, which seems to be a mainly social club (lots of trips, dinners etc) and The Independent Porsche Club, which to be honest I don't know much about. Both have websites (Google will find them). Also there are some email-based clubs organised through Titanic. There is definitely one for 964s and I am pretty sure there is one for 993s. They are an excellent way of learning more about your car and also getting involved in a bit of Porsche chat!

PS On advantage of the Porsche Club GB (PCGB) is that membership might help you get cheaper Insurance etc. They also have a pretty good glossy magazine every month.
