Need to replace heater matrix/core

I've been having steamy windows, a smell of coolant and an intermittent check coolant warning and it looks like I need to replace my heater core. Probably looking at around £600 for the specialist to do it.

Has anyone done this themselves or have access to a guide?

I'm fairly novice when it comes to car DIY - have done some basic jobs like brakes / MAF replacement. Looks like you can get access from the frunk only and I'll need to drain/vacuum the coolant and replace it which is new to me.

Thanks in advance.

Mine needs doing but waiting till better weather. Access is from under the frunk lid. See guide below:

Thanks for this.

Do you think it's a job that can wait then? It certainly doesn't cause me much of an issue day to day; just the very occasional misting and heat, which kind of helps in the winter months. I guess coolant leaking about isn't ideal.

Maybe i'll wait for the summer too. Was thinking of sourcing a used part possibly. Is it an absolute must to suck out and replace the coolant? If this requires expensive parts, I might be better going wth the specialists.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a novice!

Thanks, so no messing with the coolant then.

That's a good price, used though.

My specialist were saying around £280 for a new part.

oooops didn't see that

You will also need a new foam panel that seals the heater box / matrix .

Fitting the new one of these is just about the hardest part of this job .. its sticky and unless you are careful it sticks to the bodywork it touches .

It's a very easy job and you will have no trouble .

Just to confirm though .. do you have steamed up windows on the inside when the car warms up and possibly a sticky residue on the windscreen ?

That's the normal type of symptoms for this .. if you are putting a pint of coolant in per week then it won't be this part as a leak from the matrix goes into the car and will soak the carpets .

Thanks for this. I recently had a major service and the specialist seemed fairly sure it was the heater matrix. I've definitely been having steaming on the inside of the windows, which made think the air con was on its way out initially, and occasional blasts of heat. The carpets don't seem wet but there is a sweet smell in the cabin that the specialist noticed more than I did TBH.

Where can I source the foam panel? Thanks again.

Halfords can degas and regas so it's not a problem .. new seals are best though.

I would think actually getting the matrix out and past this pipe might be a struggle if not removed .. to be honest it's been years since i've done this so i'm unsure but a quick trip to halfords will get the gas out if needed .

Think of the labour saving .. also think of the fun in doing this job .. it's a challenge .. well worth a diy instead of having someone like me doing it and my garage charging you for the pleasure .

It's an achievement and worth the effort imho .

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go, take some pictures and report back. All part of the fun! First off I'm removing the front bumper on Monday to clean out the crud. Should be satisfying.

Planning on taking this job on shortly, particularly if I get isolated! Do you know where I can source the foam panel? Haven't had any luck via Google but probably using the wrong search terms.

Thanks in advance. Will post some project pics when I get underway.
