Update 04/03/2020 - now 5 years on.
So, another year on and my 911 driving season has started again.
I've followed the market avidly for the last 4 months and am amazed at how values of the 991 have fallen in that time with some very nice 3.4s available for low £40ks and equally nice 'S'cars starting at £48k. I could even get into my dream 4S for the £55k I was originally planning to spend on a 2S but sadly the market for 997 Turbos has gone much the same way so my likely 'cost to change' to any of these would be much the same as it was 18 months ago.
At the start of the year I made the decision that I didn't actually want to add any extra £££s to my 911 pot but, because I'm totally addicted to scrolling the AT and PH classifieds, I switched my attention to evaluating what I could get with a notional £40k budget.
My research concluded that my £40k would get me into a very nice Gen2 997S Carrera (2 or 4) complete with warranty from a specialist dealer. For that money I'd be running a 4 year newer car with 30k miles less use.
If I was looking to buy my first 911, I know that such a car would suit me perfectly. Obviously my circumstances are a bit different from that so I took to listing 'the pros and cons' of keeping 'Red' for another 6-12 months.
The 'con' list was a single line – the current mileage.
The list of 'pros' was considerably more extensive.
473 bhp and 457 lb.ft torque making it easy for this average driver to press on comfortably.
'Top Trump' figures of 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and 193 mph Vmax.
The ability to cruise comfortably at 140mph with instant oomph available from that.
Slower depreciation than any replacement.
No servicing or consumables required until March 2021.
111 point OPC check passed in September 2019.
OPC Warranty in place until February 2022.
That iconic 'turbo' badge and wide bodied stance.
My first drive of 2020 took place on Sunday and I'm happy to report that I fell in love all over again once again proving how difficult it is to move on from a 911 Turbo.
I've already got a 1,200 mile Euro Trip planned and several Porsche events to attend by mid-summer so for now 'I'm sorted'.
