The call for an aircooled was too strong.. 1972 Fiat 500

While on holiday in the hilltop village of Triora, a place supposedly with links in times past to witchcraft..I was surprised and delighted to stumble upon a Fiat club visit to the village.. I grabbed some pics.

So yesterday Joe and I drove down to Abingdon to collect the 650 engine but not before we got a tune out of it :thumb:

So been quite busy working on the Fiat with my 14 year old son Joe.
I gave the new to me engine a full service and carefully port matched the exhaust manifolds to the head and also the inlet manifold.
We also swapped out the alternator for the original dynamo as it looks more period correct and works well.
This involved changing over much of the tin wear and bracketing.
The starter pull cable and wiring needed to be rerouted also as the starter is on the side of the engine on a 652 and on top on the 500.

Then a final burnish of the lettering with 800 grit paper wrapped around a flat file and then a coat of clear to seal it.
Did the rocker cover too which should add another 5mph to the top speed

Looking good. 8)

Does it feel noticeably quicker/torque-ier with the new motor in?
That sump is a work of art. Things were just better in the olden days weren't they.

Will you be parting with that one too then Ady, or not just yet?

The power and torque difference is night and day compared to before.
it's totally nuts now and I'm seriously considering bigger brakes and wheels.

Would I sell?
This one is going in the hole with me

Haha, I'm glad it's a good improvement.
Good to hear it's a keeper too. Absolute icon of a car and it looks like a great example. :thumb:

PS. It looks way better than the salvage hunters one.
