Double DIN upgrade? Any advice? Apple play?

I'd be interested to know who you are using and costs. I see you are based in London as am I.
Interested in the Kenwood unit myself. My only concern are the functions I would loose through the PCM menu.

Just do as I did and program the functions you prefer before your old PCM comes out. About the only one I changed was to have the doors lock when driving off!

Forgot about anti-hijack, I don't want to lose that.

I have just had a Pioneer SPH DA230 Dab fitted to my Alfa 159. I have all my music on an iphone so it shows track names and album covers. For some reason I particularly like being able to use Waze on a decent sized screen (my iphone is the small SE). Being able to make phone calls by voice and receive texts and whatsapp messages (read out if you like too) is great. Phone is connected via a USB cable.

Got to grips with the controls in a day or so as it is intuitive. DAB radio is also a nice upgrade for me.

Looks good too.

No idea how it would work on a 997 but the info that was on the old system is still available on the dashboard between the dials as it was before but not on the Car Play unit.

Reverse cameras are an optional extra.

Cost me £600 fitted without a reverse camera

Thanks guys.

Think I have settled on the Kenwood 8019, caraudiesecurity in Hayes have quoted £175 for fitting and £170 for the fitting kit/cables etc. I intend to get the Kenwood myself as it'll be cheaper.
The owner has a 997GT3 so confident they know how to fit to my 997.
Expect to get fitted before a weeks break in Cornwall mid Feb. The travel to Cornwall and touring fro a week should be a good test of the unit.

Excellent read guys - thanks for all the information sharing

I too miss the creature comforts of a modern interface on the daily hack....

My car has Nav & CD changer, two things which take up Frunk space!!! Whilst I take this car on European holidays with the wife and kids, every inch counts :floor:

The Kenwood 7170 looks like a good bit of kit for under £1k. If it has apple car play then thats a win. I use Waze alot, but its also nice to just have that built in Nav Option for when the phone technology isnt working.

There is also a Pioneer unit which I was looking at, cant recall it atm.

Whilst my car has Bose, ill make sure what ever I get can take the Optical add on.

Update. I've ordered this unit and I collect tomorrow. Advice from Auto Audio was that this unit has the best user interface which you seem to agree with.

I'll fit at the weekend and keep you guys updated. Glad I'm fitting before the Spa/Belgium trip. Will be a pleasure to drive & have Car Play.

Did I read somewhere you have to set everything (balance, bass etc) back to zero before you remove the PCM unit ?

I had heard this and did before I had the Kenwood fitted. I also set the PCM menu up for auto-wipers, auto-locking doors etc.

Very pleased with the Kenwood which is the 8019. Especially like the fact it does have buttons to adjust the volume. And a button to enable Siri, which means I can dictate messages and request it to make calls. Nav is great as I can now use Waze and get to use my music apps.

Just had a Pioneer fitted into my 997.2 - with steering control etc.

So good to have DAB, and once I plug my phone in - I get car play and the use of Waze is a god send.

How much are these Pioneer units and how do they compare to £150 Android units?

Price is just under £300. No idea how they compare though.

I've got the Pioneer AVH-9100DAB unit in mine with a OEM-look surround, having first put in the Dynavin N6-PS (which I hated). It does exactly what I want it to do and I don't miss anything from the OEM unit or the Dynavin.

Not sure what the difference between this and a £150 android unit is, but the unit cost is only one part of the cost - once you've added the cost of the connection loom, the fitting fees (it is a bastard to fit) along with all other peripherals (the surround, the DAB aerial, reversing camera, phone mics etc) you might as well have bought the high end head unit.

If you have Bose you have the added complication of compatibility with the optical fibre connection to the Bose amp, or adding another component that bridges the gap.

ive posted on here along with one of the other chaps (AslanC2S)...about an Android unit specifically designed for the 997 / 987 and it is the obsolete dogs.

It can support both BOSE with the Fibre optic addition and CANBUS controls for steering wheel + reversing camera, etc.

As its Android you are not restricted by a single media player or GPS / SAT NAV.

Unless ... A) Money is not a real issue for you so chucking more than £1000 doesn't need to be justified !! B) Are a SERIOUS audiophile,...then i challenge you to really tell the difference with this HU over a so called recognized brand..for which your paying for all of the marketing.

They are all made in China using the same components and electronics !

The other benefit of these units (like the DYNAVIN which has an outdated crappy propitiatory Windows CE based operating system ) is that you dont have to add a surround to it and look OEM (almost identical to the Gen 2 HU)

Just my 2 pennies !

I have a gen 1 - where in the PCM 2.1 do I find these controls please? I have been all over it this afternoon and cannot find them.

Secondly, what is the Chinese unit referred to above please?

Cheers

I popped into a local car audio specialists today after this thread piqued my interest (and the fact my Denison b/t no longer functions after a prolonged issue with my car meaning it's now sporting a new ECU and various new modules - the bill would have paid for a top spec. install :x ).

Anyway.... the new Pioneer SPH-DA250DAB was on display and I was given a quick demo with CarPlay using my iPhone - impressive, quick response and, more importantly as a bit of an audio lover, really pleased to see Tidal and Qobuz offer hi-res apps for CarPlay/Pioneer.

I went in with no intention of buying, walked out having ordered a 250Dab, aerial, fitting kit retaining Bose amp and steering wheel control and a quote for a Focal, Hertz and Audison bespoke option for when funds recover in a couple of months!
