On a separate note, what's the best way to clean up the rubber gaitor?
 
Is it similar to gummi pflege?

I tried that and it didn't come up as well as expected.

It is a similar product yes. It's been a good few years since I used BMW's Gummi Pflege which did work on creaking door seals.

I've heard Autoglym Vinyl & Rubber Care is good although personally haven't tried it yet.
