997 Purchase

Good evening all. I am looking to buy my first Porsche in the next couple of months, and have decided on the 997.2 C4S. I had 2 questions:

1. If I buy from a known Porsche specialist, is that assurance enough that they're not going to hide anything, or would you advise to get it independently checked as well?
2. I live near Reading, are there any independent specialists that anyone could recommend for servicing and maintenance?

Cheers!

James

Northway, not too far from OPC Reading, are absolutely brilliant.

Re inspection it rather depends on the specialist concerned... some I'd buy without question, others less so. No harm in getting an inspection done for peace of mind.

:welcome:

General consensus would be to do a PPI :judge:

Having recently bought a 997, the PPI definitely saved me a few bob - but also, as the car isn't normally on ramps when they do it, some things can be missed. This was the case on mine but to be fair, the things missed weren't what you'd normally expect on a gen 2. Overall, if you're buying privately or are not 100% confident about the car, then get one done.

For specialists, as @Robertb says +1 for Northway near Reading. They just did some work for me and were really rather good.

OPC Reading - 111 point check will cost you about £250, this would also give the possible option to add / extend a Porsche Warranty.

Both Uber GT and RSJ are reasonably close by. I've also used Northway many times.

Good luck with your purchase

I bought a 997.2 from Ashgood (not far from Reading) in November. They're a well regarded dealer. The car seemed great, but as I'm meticulous I took it to a classic car garage, got them to strip off every plastic panel and inspect it. They found that many of the non structural items were corroded, and the sills were just beginning to go at the seams. I had a full underbody refurb done (several thousand £) so I'd never buy another one without having the plastic stripped. However, now mine has many coats of rustproofing everywhere I feel happy. Most people are in denial: there's no reason they will corrode less than any other car.

Where did the previous owner live? Just had the trays off our our 12 year old 997 and no rust at all - excluding exhaust fittings etc - and now covered in BH UC so should be good for another 20 years. Odd that yours was so corroded at that age.

Local ish to Berkshire or Surrey from memory. Wet winter salty roads will affect any car - more than being based in a coastal region

Ours gets used all year round as daily so has seen its share of salt - and we only clean it properly once a month - but it has only done 55K so that may explain the difference.

RSJ Sports in Slough. Their prep is unbelievable and the car will look like new when you pick it up.

Get a Peter Morgan PPI. Even if you're buy from a reputable garage.
For me it is Insurance and peace of mind that I am buying a good car.
The report that comes back is like having a structural survey on a house. And it also gives you negotiating power to get all the jobs found completed prior to collection. If the garage is reputable they should be no questions on having the work done.
Good luck.

Mine had done 49k

Another vote for RSJ in Slough, great guys who stand behind their warranty. They dont buy bad cars so you dont buy a bad one.
