Double DIN upgrade? Any advice? Apple play?

looks a like to much like an after market bodge.
- Agreed, the black stereo in the silver trimmed car looks quite misplaced.

I'm looking at fitting an Alpine unit in to a gen 2, am I correct in thinking its plug and play with no need for an adapter bar a single pin re-site to activate the amp?

I'm non-BOSE.

but surely Porsche use black buttons in a silver dash? Seems to work well to me and matches the rest of the car.

Personally not a fan of the double din with a surround...looks a like to much like an after market bodge.

Ive fitted these twice before (into my TT & latterly 987) and have just brought one for my 997.

ill be fitting it hopefully next week so i'll upload some pics.

Its full Android so you can put all sorts of media and GPS nav apps on for free.
Looking at the spec, it is quite difficult to tell if it will work with Bose or the steering wheel controls.
It does however look to be a bargain.
I look forwards to your write up.

Yes..you can get the optical kit to fit with the Bose amp.

Not used it personally as mine have previously had the Ask amp

Thanks for the information, I will do some more research on this.
I will be really interested in your write up on the install in the 997.

Does anyone know where to get a list of wireless CarPlay units?

They all do bluetooth and/or wireless but finding one where you have wireless CarPlay is harder.

Any ideas?

I've just installed an Alpine ilx 700 in my 997.1 looks fine with the surround.

Mine was non-Bose so a little easier to install, however the lack of a volume knob is a PITA. When I got the Apline a couple of years ago I was led to believe these were one of the best for Apple Car Play - having worked with Apple in the specs. I'm sure things have moved on.

If you swap your wheel, I'd be interested in your current one.

What steering wheel is fitted to your car? We could swap, maybe?

I've had two top end Pioneer, the current one is a AVIC-980DAB, but I want s new Android auto unit so I can put Waze on.

Thing is, I don't see the point of most of the features now, I don't use CD's, playing video is not necessary, or displaying pictures.

Think I might try a budget eBay special, I had one a few years back and it was rather good, all I need is DAB, radio, USB, Android auto and Bluetooth.

I have an Alpine 9inch (too big for a 997) in another car same as iLX702D double din.

We have android so you need to plug it into the phone for Android Auto but it works great. use google to ask for location and it loads waze. reads out text and whatsapp messages etc. with a decent Dab ariel it it locks on all over the country

My wife says its the best thing about the car!

I'm looking to upgrade the factory screen to a more current double Din

My old PCM screen didn't have Nav but did have the factory multifunction wheel.

A few questions.

I'm guessing I will lose the multi function volume & tune use. (Not a super big deal as I'm looking to swap my wheel to the basic wheel found on GT3's)

I'm guessing that I'll lose the radio data in the instrument cluster but will the range & mpg still work via the stalk?

Can anyone suggest a good double Din with Apple Play or at least Nav?

I've seen a few surrounds that match the grey 997.1 interior. Are there any to avoid? Or should I just get one off EBay? They seem to come with wiring adapters. Will this just plug & play with my Bose system?

Thanks in advance.

Current set up.

By the way where did you get the steering wheel, gaiter and handbrake done.
Looks great.
Looking for something similar as my interior is grey as well.

I've been looking at something similar (Kenwood DMX7017DABS), but haven't taken the plunge yet: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06Y3NYCCB

Looks similar to the post above, but cheaper and maybe an older model?

The 9190 has built in satnav which makes it quite expensive.

The newer version of the 7017 is the 8019 and can currently be purchased for £400. This newer model has the wireless connectivity for CarPlay and theoretically for android auto - but that functionality seems to be a little less robust (doesn't work with all phones etc).

I have the 7017 but may be about to upgrade to the 8019.

I have been waiting a couple of years for a head unit with native WiFi for CarPlay so the 9190DABS will be the unit for me - I really like the integration with the dashcam DRV-N520 so I will get that too.

Would like a reversing camera (might as well do it all while there) but I am still trying to work out a way of doing that with out having to cut a hole in the rear PU.
