my new 997.2

Pretty difficult to nail the noise down but some thoughts ..

if it was any pulley , alternator or anything belt driven then it would be there stationary and alter with rpm .. so that's kinda out the window .

Clutch release bearing and dip the clutch when you hear the noise to see if it goes but that also tends to alter with speed ... a possible shall we say .

Try .. when you hear this noise turning off the a/c .. it's possible its low gas .. well just about and this will prove it .

Wheel bearing .. i think i'm more leaning towards this but the noise won't really start to 30 plus mph .. sometimes they don't alter with speed so a possible .

Tyres are another possible but different road surfaces will change the noise .. if constant and the same then i would rule this out as well .

Sound clip i'm afraid .. need something to work from as whilst i don't recognise every noise .. i do know quite a few :)

I was gonna say the Mrs too :thewife:

You're wheels are winter wheels hence why 18's :thumb:

Good choice, i have a 3.6 manual C2 too, brilliant car.

As for the whining, funny that cos mine does have one too, i notice it more on smoother roads and only noticed it after i changed my top mounts recently, my money is on a wheel bearing.

Aren't they just the standard (non 'S') wheels?

Thanks for you message. I'll try to get a better quality sound clip but I think you're right, it's probably something wheel/tyre related. There's a slight rattle from the exhaust area on start so it might be something loose rattling and resonating

I think they're called Carrera IV's as far as I can tell. Pretty sure they came standard on the car as there were no wheel option codes on the option list. Been looking for a while and haven't seen many, if any, 997.2s with those wheels

That's probably your heat shields, either exhaust or coil pack heat shields, another thing that needs sorting on mine!

Been a long time lurker on 911uk but finally managed to bag myself a 997.2 manual. Pretty basic spec but I like it and hadn't seen many with 18" wheels like mine.

All seems good so far but have a little high pitch whine from the rear when driving and not sure what that might be, any ideas would be welcome!

Love the colour on this.

Enjoy in good health

They are the Carrera IV wheels. Popular fitment for winter tyres. Often upgraded on non-S cars, so not often seen.

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to the forum.

I still love my manual c2 4 years on. They're so rewarding.

Could the noise just be from the gearbox being close behind you? I noticed strange sounds when I first got mine, as it's so different to my previous front-engined experience.

I think it may well be totally normal and my ears playing tricks on me. I'll keep a watch on it and try to get a recording of it at some point. If I get to the bottom of the issue, if there is one, I'll post on here again.

Also, thanks everyone for all their input and welcomes! :thumb:

You could do worse than drop it over to an indy just to check it out - somewhere like Wrightune are doing a winter check at the mo.
Worth checking general condition underneath the noise, and maybe coolant / antifreeze conc.

A bit of an update on this. I took the car to Wrightune - they seemed like a pretty decent set up and really helpful. The guy there test drove the car and gave it a decent check over.

In the last few days I started noticed a vibration from the rear of the car which I thought was to do with a loose heat shield or something and wasn't that worried about it. It happens only when the throttle is up and in the 'off" position and I'm decelerating. On the test drive they said that it disappeared when the clutch was depressed (it does) so it's probably gearbox related. He said that he didn't know what it was but the first thing to do was to drain the gearbox oil and change it and it was probably a bearing. Does anyone have an idea what this might be?

They also noticed that the brake lines were corroded so badly where they came to the rear wheel arches and connected to the rear callipers that they could go anytime and also the front coolant pipes were really corroded and also could go anytime

I did have a PPI before I bought the car and the coolant pipes were picked up but the specialist who went over the car to fix some of the other issues found on the PPI said that they were corroded but not leaking so were fine. They didn't mention the brake lines when they changed the discs and pads. The corroded brake lines were also not mentioned on the PPI report either. Are they easy to miss?

The dealer I bought it from has actually been really good so far with pretty much everything and I hope it continues that way

Any opinions on the above would be welcomed but I'll update when if I find out what the actual issue is.

If you going to get the brake lines done I would go with braided brake lines also its very lightly that the you may find some seized and break so ensure the guys that do the job have access to a hellebore . :thumb:

I've managed to get a recording of it. Excuse the terrible commentary but you can just about hear the noise between 4-5 seconds and again at 13-15 seconds on the clip below (it's much louder in the car).

When I say 'take your foot of the clutch" I mean accelerator and you probably need the volume up quite high. If anyone recognises what this is, I would really appreciate the info. It's in at an Indy at the moment
