996 c4s fuel tank capacity?

Sounds like it may need new front coffin arms (common problem), drop links (easy job) and a brake fluid change.

Personally, I'd get the car MOT'd by your usual guy. It may well fail on some of the points you've noted (excessive play on ball joints/stabilisers/droplinks) and I think you should expect to buy a car from a dealer that is roadworthy (i.e would pass an MOT at the point of sale).

I'd not worry about the perished bump stop. Some of the rubber suspension components can look a bit tatty/perished but sill work fine.

The aircon fluid may be leaking out of the condensers, hence the noise & oily residue. This means new condensers, which will be a few hundred £ at least so I'd want that sorted by the dealer if at all possible.

Get some mesh grilles fitted when the front bumper is off to protect the rads and condensers in future.

If it says insert cd then nav is fitted and a cd is needed to load the software ... nav disc will sort that problem.

Bump stop .. normal these days and not worth doing unless with other shock work .. garage will not fix .

Link rods and ball joint play .. that's not so good .. garage will probably dispute this .. it needs to be done if keeping the car though.

Brake fluid .. it should be done every 2 years .. i suspect that a measurement of water over the limit and its not been done in many a year .. poor maintenance i feel .

There does seem to be many problems on this car so far which is a shame .

Just an update thought it may be of interest.

Got the car back after the dealer serviced it to officially hand it over.
They did the following:

Replaced two front tyres with new continentals
New front brake pads
Two new AC radiators, blowing proper cold now
Fixed passenger electric seat issue
New strut/damper for front boot
New coffin arm driver side- driving much better.
Fixed reverse parking issue
replaced indicator lens
Gave a sat nav cd so it works now

So I am quite impressed with them.
Told me to keep an eye on the fuel tank capacity and if it did not improve then they would take it in again.
I did some research and tried the following:
Filled up to the brim(range now 230 miles gauge showing full), drove straight home and disconnected the battery for 1.5 hours. Reconnected the battery and turned on ignition for 5 minutes not the engine.
Range now 325 miles .I think the fuel sensor and fuel gauge now reading from the same book.
Dealer is Portiacraft.

I bought from them because they are local now I am so glad I did.

Thank you for all the replies.

I'm impressed by the fact that they let you take the car, compile a list of things to fix and take it back for them to be addressed before 'handover". That really is stand out service!

On a separate note, whatever happened to that guy buying a car from Glasgow which had a long list of things to be done, an even longer list of excuses and an even longer still 'delivery" time?

Just thought I would give an update.

I still have the same problem with the fuel, so took it back to them Potiacraft.

Portiacraft say they have replaced the sender from another car but the gauge is still not working correctly.

I have since removed the sender to check the tank, looks OK and clean not imploded thank goodness.

I decided to take the car to another specialist who has a PIWIS2 for calibration..
He could not calibrate the fuel gauge. Then discovered the instrument cluster was from another car as it had a different chassis number assigned to it. He coded this to match the car and calibrated, still no joy.
As it stands he is suggesting it could be the float or the instrument cluster.
I have since driven the car for 100 miles after the warning light and -- sign came on. So I know the petrol is in there.

Does anyone know if I can test the fuel level sensor or the instrument cluster?

Was the cluster from a car with the same tank? I know they are different between the C2 and C4 as if I run my C4 cluster in my C2 it reads a lot higher.

That is a very good point.

I have booked it back into Portiacraft on the 19th.
They say they will put a trial cluster to see if thats the problem.

Thank you very much.

Just an update.

Fitted a used cluster. Filled her up and zeroed the mileage, did a run from London to Birmingham.
Drove like an old lady and the mileage shows 301 with a range of 60 still left.
So definitely the problem is the instrument cluster. I would normally show empty at 120 to 140 miles.
So now my original cluster will be repaired by Portiacraft, no cost to me.

Everything on hold at the moment due to covid 19.
Not complaining, the instrument cluster is by far the least of problems.

Who would have thought this could happen in a few weeks.

Just an update to inform of resolution.

My car had in 2014 a 2nd hand replacement instrument cluster which was not from a C4S, so the reading of the fuel tank was not correct.
Luckily I had a receipt for this in the paperwork and the work was done by by the same dealer.
They then changed the instrument cluster (also 2nd hand) to the correct C4S cluster and now everything works great.
I now get 300 plus from a full tank.

Thanks for all the help, thought it should be made aware that the instrument clusters are not interchangeable.

Now just wondering if I should change the IMS.
