Coullstar, he is now buying a Ginetta to race.

Awesome.
Are you going to make it a little more stock-looking, such as with the old Dunlop-style alloys and bulged wings, rather than the extensions and wing it currently has?

Tough decision, with many potential options. The car came with 3 sets of Forged Motorsport wheels: one set of ATS DTC in 17x9 as per below in silver. Then 2 sets of Team Dynamics Pro Race in black 17x9 and 16x7.

I also started working on the car today, you can see the 16" wheels in black on the front in one of these pictures. I'm thinking of painting these in gold :?: There is also a 3kg per wheel weight saving between the two (19.8kg vs 16.7kg both including tyre). With fitting the 16's I can then also look at other arch options (the 16's sit in a further 30mm per side). The current arch extensions are 9cm but I do have another 2 sets which are narrower. Original wheel options will not work as the biggest set is a 15" (Alfaholics) and wont clear the calipers. Besides this, in terms of going back to original style, I'm considering removing all the undertray system (diffuser, front spoiler/splitter and rear wing). It would be a shame in some respects as it has been so well made including finding a solution to fit an original Radical diffuser, but ground clearance for a road car is a must. Currently 8cm but my drive way is pretty steep so there is contact.

Todays work included a slight arch modification for wheel clearance, then decided to remove some of the stickers. I left the door ones on for the time being as I'm not sure if I want to remove them :?:

WT Actual F    .
this is bloody amazing. You lot impress me with what some of you get up to in your spare time. Speechless.

I am losing the ability to keep up with all your threads, but this one is setting new heights. Please do a video walk around and tell us a little bit about the details.

On a personal taste issue, the smaller black TD's would be my choice - I just think the stance is better than with the larger wheels, and black / red is the theme I follow on my toy cars. (Whilst on the subject, the white rounders without any numbers link to the cage......). Oh boy, I wish I had these problems.

It does sound as if your driveway is destined for phase 2 modifications 🙂

That is one sweet little Alfa Junior, one of my customers will have to re-evaluate his life once I send him a link to this thread, I`ve been telling him for the last 6 years he needs to "get with the program" and actually live his dream and get a toy car like the rest of us

Thanks guys, glad you like the car ;)

I like your thinking John, so I'm thinking of painting the wheels white to tie in with the cage and door decals (minus numbers). Regarding driveway mods, I'm considering knocking down a wall in the garage (joins an apartment currently used for guests). This will then allow another 2 cars in plus a workshop facility/storage... I'm sure the boss wont mind

Have been working on the car all day today as I am going for a more subtle look whilst trying to retain an element of its race heritage; so rear diffuser, mid undertray, side skirts, rear wing, most of the decals and a few other tidying up jobs completed on the car:

So a less busy rear end now and no more ground clearance issues from the Radical diffuser.

Much better access to the rear axle

This pictures give an indication of how wide the car currently is.

WOW; one of the most beautiful cars to grace our roads. dragged into the 21st century. you have my respect, admiration and an element of jealousy too!

Thanks for your comments guys ;)

Now found a solution to the parking issue ;) So unfortunately that means no more 996 updates for the winter as I am knee deep into the Alfa. I basically have to turn a race car into a road car; not as simple as one would assume but for me one of the most enjoyable aspects of the ownership experience is finding solutions to engineering problems and in this case, hitting the right balance between full on crazy (as now), blended with a touch of manners and class befitting for the gentlemen racer type: NVH, rattles, fuel smells (via openings), completely different chassis set-up and geo, bodywork changes, paint, welding, complete interior redesign, windows, fitting handbrake, sliding rather than fixed seats etc.

Well that's the plan anyway so we'll see how it all develops over the course of the next few winter months...

A few pictures from recent progress. I also took it out for my first drive the other day, brutal in every sense

I realise this won't be of much interest here, but for those crazies that may be interested, I thought it about time for an update on this project.
In other good news I've also been speaking with Manthey and and they will be getting involved in the final stage of development with the 996CLR shortly, more on that later ;)

Interior is now pretty much sorted in terms of NVH, test drive will confirm but a lot of attention has gone into sound proofing, carpeting, sliding seats, sealing, and basically making it a far more friendly place to be

Next up major changes to the bodywork and external appearance. Panel beating, welding, painting, wheels, new arches, new ground effect panels made, most crazy race-car aero and diffuser removed revealing the beautiful classic 'Bertone' lines:

After the mid section and diffuser were gone the car was left looking like this; front end still very agressive:

So decided to ditch the front end and make some new panels

I was also very lucky that the original owner contacted me sending pictures from back in the 70's

Due to the F1 injector set-up not really being a solution for a road car (Difficult to start or idle when fuel is being squirted onto the face of a butterfly 20cm from the combustion chamber), I have had to completely redesign the injection and throttle system also the car is mapped for E85 fuel so the injectors also need to be changed for normal fuel. Lots of head scratching to find a workable solution but I'm lucky to have a dream workshop at work with every machine you could every think of, so a lathe and milling machine came in very handy for this phase:
Following the carbon airbox removal (4 hours alone due to inaccessible fasteners...) Started to take some measurements

49432786913_fd04973d2e_k.jpg

Found some lovely short 440cc injectors only 38mm o-ring to o-ring. Due to all the redesign issues clearance was the biggest headache. I'm literally talking only 1mm or less is some instances between fuel rail and throttle linkages etc. Anyway what's the first thing you do when you receive some lovely new car parts; chop them up of course, so straight onto the lathe they go

49433486082_816a946a5b_k.jpg

Next up I needed to fabricate some parts to relocate the throttle assembly so an inch thick slab of aircraft aluminium was put to good use

Thanks for your thoughts guys, I've put serious graft into this car over the last 3-4 months and to finally be seeing light at the end of the tunnel is very rewarding. I went into this project pretty blind to be honest and had no idea how it would end up. I literally make serious changes to planned ideas on a daily basis. In some respects a blank canvas such as the 996 was somewhat easier.

This car was really built and designed as a race-car and as such never really considered future maintenance, NVH, usability, MOT requirements, noise... Don't get me wrong, what was created is truly astonishing and it is crazy to think the builder spent 13 years on this project to only do 5x 25 min sessions in it. But taking such a focused concept and dialling back several layers whilst trying to retain the essence of what makes the car so unique has been a tricky to judge. I feel this will be a constantly evolving process; which although difficult and time consuming, is fine by me as getting beneath the skin and developing is the most rewarding part of the ownership experience.

I just can't wait to finally get the engine started then onto testing and road set-up. The TUV will be a torturous experience I'm sure, but that is a little way off just yet...
