Turbo maintenance/refurb

Managed to grab a few hours here and there over the weekend so the suspension all back in place and buttoned up, new discs/sensors/pads fitted

When I took the rear ARB off I checked the bushes which looked a bit shot so they will be replaced and tidied up the corrosion on the end of the arm with a rub down and paint and cleaned the rest of the fittings.

Also gave the back boxes a test fit which look fine just waiting on some clamps to arrive to get them on.

Looking good. Id be tempted to upgrade the ARB to a GT2RS one whilst you are in there, they are not expensive and are adjustable.

Anyone tell me what size the rear ARB is 19mm 0r 20mm ?

Mines 22.5mm diameter, and I assume it is stock. Measured with some vernier calipers just now

Cheers for that , I was looking at the powerflex bushes and thought they only offered 19 & 20 mm which is why I thought the ARB was that size however I see they also have a 22mm which I am assuming is the right one :thumb:

Good stuff :thumb: . Will be interesting to hear your feedback on them; I may well use some powerflex stuff myself when I eventually get to suspension refresh stages. Cheers

Some more progress over the weekend got the ARB painted up cleaned up the brackets and gave them a finish with rustoleum top coat which I have used on other cars gives a clear grey look I also use this on the heads of all the bolts I clean up on the wire wheel keeps the surface rust off. (The ARB bushes are 22mm)

Also got the rear boxes on and intercoolers back in place and the Y pipe and plumbing all buttoned up so it got a fire up to hear the boxes nice gruff sound but not too loud so far so good.

I need to source 55-60cm straps for the back boxes cant see any on Fleabay will drop the guys at top gear a note or any suggestions for a supplier ?

The tips have to be welded up to the pipes I would like them to be at a slight angle like the GT2 RS so a bit of fiddling still to be done with them.

Looking good Gaz, will be interested to hear if you notice any difference with the Powerflex fitted.
Also regards the rustoleum, looks really good. Will be getting myself some of that I think.
What else have you got on the to do list?

and did you take the picture of the rustoleum with an old Brownie camera? :D

Haha compressed the pic and its went a bit wonky here`s a link to the rustoleum hard hat.

Not sure the powerflex will make a huge difference only went for them as they were similar price to the rubber, do you have a DSC module fitted in your car ?

next job is to change the front springs yours is coming along nicely

Cheers for the link :D

Indeed, I recall fitting powerflex to an M3 years ago and it made a big difference but that was all the bushes so understandable I guess.
DSC module as in the one TPC make? No just standard PASM here as far as I am aware; not been able to drive the car enough to really enjoy it yet so suspension is on the 'afterwards' list.

I'm guessing the lowering springs are aftermarket? What is the drop > cheers

The springs are H&R with a drop of 20mm so should bring it down nicely, once you have the expense of your engine out the way the TPC-DSC should be on the list of upgrades just makes the car so much more compliant they pop up now and again for £750mark second hand.

Sounds good, few other things on the list though, I also like the look of the KW variant 3 coilovers but we shall see which direction the car takes!

Started with a bit of prep on the aeorkit wing this weekend which got rubbed down with a fine pad and hoping to get the lid done this week as well with the intention of getting the wing ,lower valance and side skirts dropped off at the painters.

I also trial fitted the tailpipes and bumpers which look fine needs a bit of fettling on the drivers side which is sticking out slightly more.

I also made a start on fitting the lowering springs on the front got the undertray, droplink and brake pipes removed then had intended loosening the top nut off however as you can see by the picture it is offset so couldn't get the reversable podger in that I had use on the back ( it wasn't deep enough either)

so have ordered a crows foot spanner to hopefully get in, then drop the strut enough to slip the spring out hopefully it doesn't mention it on other guides I have seen but I am going to loosen the ARB to turn it slightly to give a bit more room and change the bushes while I`m at it.

Good Progress gazc2

That front strut nut does look awkward. Will be interested to hear if the crowsfoot sorts it .

Regards the exhaust, I like shiny! will be interested to hear how it sounds at some point aka a video clip?

Keep the updates coming :)

So the exhaust tips have been welded up ready to fit however that will be next weeks job, the front springs came out fairly easily however getting the top nut of was a bit of a pain the crowfoot done the job but you end up covering the slot in the top washer so you cant get a screwdriver on to stop it spinning I ended up putting a rubber strapped oil filter remover on the shock piston to stop it turning worked fine if a little awkward amazing the amount of crud that gets trapped in the shock carrier and associated front arms the carriers are begining to show their age so rubbed down and treated with bilt hammer gel, bilt hammer heavy zinc primer and top coat of matt paint.

The various parts of the front suspension also showing their age and will be replaced the bearings in particular were pretty poor.

so waiting for the postie to arrive before putting it back together :thumb:
