996 C4S Exhaust decision...

Hello, Just bought a 2005 996 C4S and need to change the back boxes as they are blowing (new this on purchase).
I am looking at either
Top Gear - Sporty one's
Top Gear - not so Sporty ones
Milltek - Sport Cup
Can't remember the names of the Top Gear ones but they seem to have good reviews and the price is good also.
Anyway, am looking for a decent sound from the exhaust without rattling the windows in the morning or sounding like one of those guys with the coke can exhaust on.
If anyone has these on their car and can give some feedback on sound, quality etc over the standard non PSE system that would be great.
I have a sports exhaust on my 3.2 but that's purely for sunny day blasts.
Cheers all

I've got the Top Gear rather noisy rer boxes & am very pleased. Great sound on start up, a gurgle whilst warm up and fantastic scream when giving it a beating BUT no drone at all at any speed. Ask for a discount as POC or PM me for the code 10% off.

So much better than the tat of flea bay, my Indie is now converted too.

I have the switchable top gear exhaust.

It's quite loud and the switch doesn't seem to work anymore. To be fair I'd probably switch it off when I have passengers if I could!

It's a good sound though, and doesn't drone too much even on a tip. Definitely not a fart can sound at all, nor is it obnoxious enough for people to really notice that it is aftermarket exhaust. I'd recommend. Personally I prefer the sound of PSE, but it's a hell of a premium.

+1 For the Top Gear louder sports rear boxes, I've had mine on for about 8000 miles now, they sound great, mines not a daily but I use it for the occasional fair weather commute to work with no bother, you've probably already found the videos on the Top Gear website?

Reluctantly my rear boxes will most likely be coming off the car next month though as I've got manifolds and 200 cell 63mm x-pipe cats to fit so will probably have to get some quieter rear boxes for the new set up

Mine has Topgear Sports (aka Loud) boxes with a 200 cell x-pipe and standard manifolds. Not used for commuting though has a great noise on start up & I'm told sounds great when you're following it 😉. It also slightly gurgles on the over run & I've had the set up on for 12 months & about 3k miles. Top Gear supply the various clamps/bolts needed btw with the various bits which is useful to know - I'd had my exhaust off previously so the bolts etc. were ok so I fitted it myself & just bought some new lambda sensors for completeness.

I would listen to them on youtube first if I were you, I was also considering getting the top gear back boxes and the sound is a very personal thing. What sounds good to one person might sound terrible to another.

Initially I was after that raspy high pitched note like an F1 sound and found the Tubi exhaust system sounded like this in the videos I found. However the price £1k+ was a bit out of my budget so I found that the Milltek Cup system had a very similar sound to the Tubi and was a bit cheaper at just under £800.

I know I might get flamed for this but to my ears the top gear exhaust sounds a bit boomy and reminds me of those lads that drive down the high street in their hatch backs during the evening.

If you really like the top gear ones their is a pair for sale in the Porsche Parts section on the forum right now

+1 in favour of the Top Gear "Louder" pipes. I recently had these fitted by my local Specialist along with some Direnza tubular manifolds and absolutely love the sound. My car is a bit of a weekend "Toy" but like many comes out for the occasional commute on sunny days. As others have said it is surprisingly muted under normal part throttle driving but absolutely wails when you give it some shoe! I would also say that the engine feels able to rev more freely since fitting the new pipes (To replace the previous non switchable factory PSE fitted.)

Quality wise my Indy were very impressed with the quality of the new boxes and they are a lot lighter than the previous factory items. Start up noise wise? Well it's not a 2 litre Mercedes but I wouldn't have any problems starting it up early in the morning and my neighbours haven't made any comments...

That said my previous car was a Holden Monaro with straight pipes so maybe my neighbours are just relieved that THAT has gone!

Anyway. I also recommend.

Enjoy!

I recently had the exhaust replaced in my 997. The manifolds were under warrantee but the remainder I paid for.

The Porsche Sports Exhaust was not much more than replacing the original non-PSE; the original gets bought in piece by piece whereas the PSE is all-in-a-box, as it were, and therefore only about £140 more expensive.

You might enquire of your local fitter or OPC how much to retrofit the PSE?

I noticed my car seems to rev more easily now since fitting the Milltek Cup boxes - but I think that may have something to do with the condition of our exhausts after almost 20 years? Mine had loose bits rattling around inside when I shook them :floor: It used to bog down a bit when pulling out of my road (on an incline) but now it is fine with the new exhaust.

Just as an idea this is a video I recorded right after fitting the Milltek boxes. The camera doesn't pick up the high frequency sound very well and it doesn't sound as bassy in person.

Cheers for the replies!
Decided to go for the TopGear one as seemed a good deal with 10% discount (thanks Mattomg). Having them fitted next week with a few other niggles I've spotted the car needs.
Sunroof playing up...have cleaned the board on the motor and done the reset and still fiber, switch seems a bit iffy so will change that first.

Does anyone have the discount code for topgear they could PM me please.
