Beginners Tools For 996

If you are going to get a torque wrench it's worth getting one that has a calibration certificate with it (and periodically checking said calibration).

I've got three Norbar ones that (between them) go from 1Nm up to 200Nm.

Crows foot adapters are handy for some tasks, not sure if there are any on the 996 though (most of my experience is bike related).

They make changing your oil-pressure sender a lot easier on a 996.

As above, I usually buy Halfords Advanced Professional stuff, its great for the money. But for the crows-foot spanners I bought a cheap set (silverline) as they only get used once in a blue moon.....

Can't believe no one has mentioned a hacksaw and a lot of good blades yet! I've spent many hours using mine on the suspension refresh, probably had more time than all the other tools together.

A Dremel with some good cut cutting discs is also useful to get corroded bumper fixings etc. off.

All very solid suggestions. I'd add some hockey pucks for the tops of good jackstands or your low profile jack. I love my lift bars for getting the 996 in the air. 24mm socket. Brake pad spreaders. Plastic pry tools for interior work.

Two often forgotten tools are female Torx sockets: E10 for coil packs and E12 for the seat bolts. I think you get some in the 90 piece Halfords set mentioned.

Also as mentioned already, if you get into full suspension refresh work, a recip saw with a good blade, a heavy duty impact wrench and heat in some form ( be it propane torch or magnetic induction coil) for removing steel/alloy corroded in bolts.

I've found that there are a few bolts on the suspension where the size isn't in a normal combination set. I bought halfords professional 16, 18 & 20mm. Cannot remember which fits where but needed some / all when I fitted shocks, springs and coffin arms.

The suspension typically requires 10, 13, 15, 17 (for end of drop link once you have take the link off), 18, 21 mm nuts/bolts generally. And 19 for the wheels of course. 15 and 18 are quite common on German cars where 13,17,19 are more common on other European brands.

Additional tip is it is to have only 6 point sockets not 12 point sockets when you ahve to deal with seized in parts to help avoid burring off the hex. And a good breaker bar!

The only thing I can think of is the service manual I got mine in CD form and quite often refer to it to actually understand what I am trying to do

Oddly enough I found myself in the same position as the OP so this is my list:

Foxwell NT530 scanner with Porsche SW package.
Stormski exhaust Jig
Laser 8201 IMS removal/installation tool
US pro universal joint sockets (to remove the dreaded 3rd aircon pump bolt)
51 years of assorted tools
Oxy acetlyn to try to remove the exhaust bolts
Emergency chain saw for when it all gets tooooo much!
Credit card (various)
Bently manual
Petrol for chainsaw.
