So, a few years ago I ripped out the old OEM double DIN system and installed an iPad mini (which fitted superbly!) but I'm starting to get fed up with this solution and want to replace this with something else.

So I just wondered if any of you guys could recommend a bit of kit to replace the iOS solution; what I'm looking for is:
- One single unit that does all below
- MUST be Android
- Must be able to do Google maps Sat Nav
- Play Spotify
- Radio
- Connect telephone via Bluetooth
- Planning to connect to the MOST antenna via https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=172788664193+&_sacat=0
- Have an integral amp so I don't have to have another box in the car
- Link through to existing Bose speakers
- Ideally DAB enabled or have an input slot to link one
- Ideally have a SIM card slot too...but not 100% needed

Ideally i'd like a touch-screen only model (no knobs and button) but this is a nice to have...

So what make/model do you recommend – any linkiies appreciated, plus any cages/fixing kits needed...??

Cheers geezers!! :thumb:

I went for a kenwood dmx7018dabs.

Same as the dmx7017dabs they do/did in Halfords, but without the hard buttons.

Was pretty key in my choice as I think without hard buttons you can have a much more OEM looking installation.

Does apple CarPlay and android auto, dab antenna is an extra £20 or so, i installed one but have used it exactly once.

Shallow fitting as well so plenty of room behind for MOST adaptor.

Only thing that annoys me, on the 7017 you can change the startup image to whatever you like, seems that on the 7018 you can't, or at least I have yet to find a key sequence with enters the correct menu.

Volume buttons perfectly located for when you hand is resting on gearstick.

Used the connects 2 cage and facia, about £30 for the kit if I recall.

Dan

Edited to add, would suggest a cubby tray thing to go in the slot that used to have the CD trays, I put a panel mount USB socket at the back of mine so no trailing leads and my phone fits in it perfectly.

Nice! Like that Dan - cheers m8 :thumb:

Any others anyone...??

Budget?

My Xtrons does all the above. Android unit with bags of options. Only downside is recently the sound has been a bit temperamental but I've yet to diagnose what the problem is - keeps cutting out no and again but it could be a whole load of things.

They're usually cheaper on eBay than direct from them so always check on there if you see one you like:

I had a dilemma whether to go aftermarket or stay OEM and just put a massive phone next the the screen in my 987 lol

I ended up keeping OEM and going true massive phone route

- part of my reasoning is to change the OEM headunit I would want a completely wire free solution with the phone. However Apple CarPlay or Android auto cannot operate over a Bluetooth connection so you have to plug them in :nooo: ........the current latest gen of branded aftermarket head units (kenwood, pioneer, etc...) have WiFi built in meaning you can now connect your phone completely wirelessly for full use.....works great with Apple BUT Android only currently works that way with Google phones (I wonder why ) :pc: .......so I'm waiting until they release the updates to allow Samsung android phones to connect wirelessly and I will then think again about my options, until then I'm using android auto from my phone sat next to my PCM. It auto starts on connection to the cars bluetooth and works flawlessly :thumb:

Ps I would only consider a unit with physical volume controls, as great as the Xtrons look that is the killer for me (and the fact you have to plug in the phone as above).....

Others to consider (but all require physical phone connection for android auto / car play)...Nb links may be to a 987 version

And for connectors (if they do not come with the headunit you get) https://connects2.com/Product/ProductItem/CTSPO004.2

I'm hopefully going to be in the same situation soon....the Xtron look really good for the price but then I googled this https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/xtrons.co.uk you have to scroll down a bit but the post by their former distributor makes some very worrying reading.

I'm sure others have plenty of positive experiences with them, but after reading those reviews it's concreted the reason I wanted to stick with a known manufacturer, too many experiences of dodgy integration from off brand manufacturers with electronics!

Personally, have always found Bluetooth to be far less reliable than a wired connection, out of interest jonttt, each to their own, but doesn't your phone battery discharge quite a bit if you haven't go it plugged in/on charge?

I've got an xtrons too one and it's really good especially for the money but maybe not for everyone. One thing I do wish it had was a volume knob as trying to put it up and down while driving using the small touch buttons is pretty tricky! Especially on any sort of bumpy road!

Guys – those of you that know me, now that I'm not being a spanners man or sparky. So please forgive the question but need to ask.

To achieve what I want to achieve I'd need to connect a new Android unit and reinstall the old Bose amp and, using the MOST decoder connector to connect to the antenna in the car. That will all hook uptogether...??

Ta

Yes. That should work. MOST adaptor converts the analogue output Of The head unit to fibre optic signals and will get sound to the bose system and speakers if it's all back to standard.

The antenna is separate, for FM radio reception just needs the correct adaptor depends what connections you have on your car and your new head unit: they differ between model years, just post a picture if you are unsure

If the new unit has DAB then there is usually a separate aeriel/antenna for that. You can get a glass mount DAB aeriel which sticks on side the windscreen off eBay
