Hello everybody,

I am the mystery buyer that purchased the seal grey 997.1 C2S from Classic Car Auctions at the weekend. I purchased unseen and un-inspected, which is frankly how I tend to buy my cars. Some you win, etc, etc. I am sensible enough to always keep a contingency fund for "issues". I was very happy with the price paid all said and done.

The car was delivered today. I have to say that CCA were excellent to deal with (though I am a previous customer which may help) and their transport company E M Rogers also did a first class job.

So, what of the car?

Well, first impressions are good. The general condition for a fifteen year old car is very good indeed. There are some very tiny scratches and age related marks, but most of these will clay and polish out once I get cracking on it. The interior is excellent and the car came with every old MOT from new (passes and fails) as well as the original Porsche book pack and wallet, a fully stamped service book and every invoice from new as well. In fact, it has all the hallmarks of a well-maintained and very well cared for car, which is great.

It idles smoothly, drives very well and tracks arrow straight. Tyres are matching and recent P-Zeros and the brakes look recent too. There are several big bills, 90% of which are from Porsche main dealers. I have not had time to study the box file of bills in any detail yet, but was gratified to see a RMS change under the Goodwill scheme by Porsche Cardiff at 43,000 miles.

Naturally, there are few jobs to do. The air-con blows warm, in spite of considerable expense on it including new condensers just a year ago, so something is awry there. The gearstick feels a bit "sloppy" though the change itself is perfect.

I wouldn't mind getting it checked over by a decent specialist but have no idea who to go to. I am located in Bromley on the Kent/SE London border. I am in fact less than two miles from 911Box, but I have always associated them more with sales than service. I know a couple of folk who have bought cars from them (and been very pleased), but nobody who has had maintenance done there.

Still, any recommendations are welcomed, whether regarding them or any other firms who aren't a gazillion miles away. I realise that I have an official Porsche centre nearby at Sidcup as well, if I want to go the expensive route.

So, a few pictures, literally as delivered earlier:

My little daughter approves anyway....

All help, comments, recommendations gratefully received.

Brave man :worship:

A health check by your local OPC wouldn't be too expensive. They don't know that you won't necessarily be using them to fix what they find. They'll give you a detailed list and you can decide what's urgent or just advisory.

Alternatively I can personally recommend Project Nine Engineering at Marden.

ps :welcome: to 911uk

Looks very clean :thumb:
Personally would try and get a bit of black into the interior such as mats, steering wheel etc. to break it up a bit but if you like the colour then thats your choice
Good that RMS has been done as they often leak or weep and normally done when clutch is replaced but don't mistake the RMS for the IMS which is the bigger issue - was this done at the same time?
May want to change the P-Zeros to Michelin PS2s or PS4s when worn a bit - I found this made a massive change to ride, grip & handling. AC wise get a dye leak test done, you may be lucky and it just needs a recharge but more than likely it will be the pipes which can be costly

The a/c pipes have a tendency to leak at the o/s/r joints just in front of the o/s/r wheel .. look for damp patches on the under trays there .

A slow leak is a pin prick hole .. it will last months after a regas but again will probably be these pipes .

Gear shift .. short shift is probably the best option there .

My garage is a bit far so what T8 said or perhaps 9 Excellence but again a bit of a trip .

Enjoy 8) An early non sunroof manual C2s is a great drive.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

Out of interest, where is your garage De Mort? Your location says Brighton, which is where my daughter lives, so could combine car drop off with a visit to her (if that is indeed where your garage is).

Train back to home is very easy from there too.....

Welcome aboard.

Lovely looking car - love the interior.

Would be good to know about De Morts garage location too?

Lovely car, lovely colour congratulations!

In the real world does the addition of a sunroof make a noticeable difference to the ride? A few more kilos where you wouldn't want it if you happened to be racing the car admittedly but I would bet the vast majority of drivers wouldn't notice any difference whatsoever!

Your probably right but why have it if you don't need it.

You could say that of anything apart from air to breath, food to eat and water to drink!

Great choice of car the 997 is the best 911 out there

I think you very brave buying an early 997 without knowing any history about the IMS as these had the same bearing fitted to the 996 which is the smaller one

It might be an idea to this checked ASAP at you local Porsche garage for piece of mind

Good luck with the new car you will love it

Mike :)

Making a Start

So, dodged the showers today, and had a closer look at the car. Pretty happy so far. Couldn't clay and polish in the bloody weather, so undertook some more menial tasks.

Firstly, the engine bay was a little dusty

As was the air cleaner housing

After washing down with Bilt Hamber Surflex, I sealed it with 303. Looks a bit better now

Popped a new filter element in there whilst it was out, though the old one didn't look too bad

After a rain break, I managed to change the boot and engine bay lights for LED units. A small change, but makes a big difference

Did the same with the number plates lights (ensured that I put the necessary resistors in too)

Have had a thorough read through the history. The car was supplied by Dick Lovett Swindon, and the first owner lived in Bristol. Interestingly, all the history from this period is with Porsche Cardiff. The car was sold through the approved Porsche second-hand system to a buyer in south wales who continued the history at OPC Cardiff. It then seems to have been sold to a guy in Surbiton. He seems to have been very attentive, and took the car with him when he relocated to Grimsby (an interesting one). During his ownership the southern services were done by OPC West London and then OPC Sheffield.

Since he sold the car in 2015, it has changed hands a further three times (including me). The history is pretty fulsome though, and as well as the service stamps, I have most of the invoices.

The air-con problems were attended to in September 2018. The invoice notes major leaks found at the condensers, so both condensers were replaced. It then says, "leak traced to rear inlet" whatever that means?

Working around the car today, I felt I got to know it a bit better. It still starts, drives and runs very well, so looking forward to building the relationship.
