Ticking Noise at Idle

I have lived with an annoying ticking noise at idle for some time now.

I read in another post a response from deMort. As ever when such wisdom is shared I pay attention. Ticking noise at idle - brake booster / tandem pump... is this the same for a Gen 1?

I have a 2006 C4S. And before others wade in, it's not associated with bore scoring. The tandem pump was replaced just over 5 years ago and the engine has had a FULL Hartech rebuild, all 6 cylinders soon after with only 24k miles on the clock. I had a new timing chain installed as 'betterment' during the rebuild.

Occasionally the ticking noise at idle isn't there but majority of time it is. Car is now on 39k Miles. It doesn't use oil and is religiously warmed up before any spirited driving.

I read info about chain tensioners and that there is little can be done to sort the ticking. Sticky hyd tappet has also been suggested.

Any advice on how to narrow this down without spending a small fortune 'troubleshooting"?

Thats a rare fault and Gen 2 only .. it's a possible but highly unlikely fault based on that one post which was more related to the debris in the oil filter :)

My guess is a sticking tappet due to the intermittent nature you have described .

Sound clip of it if possible with you walking around both sides of the car at the rear please .

I had a Boxster with a ticking noise you would have sworn was a tappet, turned out to be a loose plug.

We have posted various long and detailed replies about this problem that has many sources and sometimes cannot be found whatever you do, spend or replace.

Regarding the intermittent nature of the sound coming and going - there is another possible explanation. The engine management system slows down the tickover when the engine warms up and as it gets hotter and has several different speeds it lowers the revs (8 or 10 choices I think) - without showing it on the rev-counter.

So when you leave it ticking over the coolant temperature rises and falls as the fans kick in and out and sometimes results in the tickover speed dropping too low and resulting in this typical hydraulic tensioner weakness creating cam chain snatch causing the tick.

The tickover speed is detected once/rev so the engine can "hunt" at low revs between firing cylinders as it tries to balance slightly different individual cylinder performances at such small fuel delivery speeds and can result in the tickover being too slow as it tries to balance itself.

As we are in the hot weather I would check the radiator fans are working (or working soon enough) as this can influence that whole scenario.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I'm struggling to upload a video clip, keeps coming up with 'no post mode specified"?!?

Any 'how to guides' for a techno phobe?

Why don't you just upload it to youtube, and post the link here?

If you are using gmail and already logged in, go to youtube in a new tab. Upload it using their 'studio' or something. Really painless and effective.

I've sent you a couple of emails. See what you think. Thanks!

...sounds pretty normal to me...these are noisy , mechanical engines which tend to amplify their internal workings owing to their flat configuration...

Mine has had £14k's worth of rebuild and sounds similar from memory; hardy ever drive it sadly...

Of course phone microphones do exaggerate the sounds recorded...[/list]

...tbh I was surprised this post didn't receive more interest given the general anxieties around these engines...

Did you seek a view from a Porsche specialist?

Normal  it don't sound like my 997 C4 :? if that is normal then i'm happy mine isn't

...full hartech rebuild thus probably as baz has indicated; some just make a noise ? Are noisier than others...

Mine was serviced recently by Williams Crawford a very well respected Porsche Independent whom raised no issues stating mine was exemplary...

I'm sorry but that doesn't seem right to me... especially as it was rebuilt not so long ago.
