3.8 engine rebuild - who and how far to go?!

Hi All,

Many thanks for all the advice so far on my other threads.

I've gone full circle and decided to buy the original S Cab (2006) that I had borescoped and was diagnosed with light scoring to 4&6.

The seller has been fantastic and we have agreed to reduced price that makes it viable for me to have the cylinders rebuilt.

Now I need to work out:

1. Which specialist to use
2. Do I do both 4-6 & 1-3
3. How many other items should I do while the engine is out - clutch, IMS etc

'1' is my immediate priority and I am thinking:
1. Hartech, or
2. Northway
3. Autofarm
4. RPM
5. Jaz Porsche
6. Portiacraft

I'm guessing most would recommend Hartech? Can also look at taking advantage of the option they offer to increase to a 3.9?

And experiences/insights are useful.

Thanks in advance!

Simon

You won't get anyone on here recommending anyone other than Hartech.

EDIT - also, i've not seen your other threads, but are you sure whoever did the borescope knows what they're looking at? it wouldn't be the first misdiagnosed - if so you could have just blagged a bargain.

I hope you got a hefty discount.

Speaking from bitter experience, I had my 997.1 done at Hartech. I'd recommend them. Before doing anything else they'll borescope the engine and confirm the diagnosis (or otherwise).

Personally, I'd get all 6 done. That way you have peace of mind and the chance of recouping more of the costs at resale.

There's engine rebuilds and there's Hartech rebuilds - DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO. Totally different processes.

Hartech - No Substitute!!

Even Porsche have copied some of their designs.

Although I did the removal, strip, rebuild and install on my 05 3.8 myself, Hartech relined all 6 cylinders and advised which components to replace. Bank 2 cylinders were all scored while Bank 1 cylinders weren't. However I'd advise relining all 6 cylinders, it just didn't feel right to have worn (104000 miles) open deck lokasil cylinders on one side and new closed deck nikasil cylinders on the other. I also replaced all 6 pistons, IMS (later larger bearing design), big end and main bearing shells, all chains, tensioning plastics, low temp thermostat and all gaskets and seals. The total cost of this was £6k (plus many hours of my time).

I'd have no hesitation in recommending Hartech, they were helpful throughout the whole process and the car has been running great since I got it back on the road at the start of May.

Hartech every time for me.. :thumb:

Hartech, just for resale value. But there are other people who are just as good, they just don't shout about it quite so much.....

Who's as good?

Unless someone has actual statistics for subsequent engine longevity/performance it's always going to be a subjective opinion either way.

Spoken to Tobias at Hartech and I am sold on their comprehensive rebuild of all 6 cylinders.

Great chat and feel very reassured.

Thanks all!

 Wise choice.

If it's only got light scoring on 2 cylinders are you going to run it until it actually needs something doing. :?:

Why would you take the risk if you plan to run the car for a few years? It's an extra £2k at this stage for 3 new closed deck nikasil cylinders and pistons. It'll also make it a far easier sell when the time comes. I know I wouldn't touch a car with only the one half done.

Eh? T8 is suggesting to do nothing. He never mentioned only getting 1 bank done?

If its only lightly scored and not burning oil why spend £10k?

Personally I'd get Hartech to check all bores then follow their recommendations. And if they say leave it be, then leave it be.
