Newbie - 997.1 S - Help Please

Hi All,

I have just joined and at the typical new joiner point in that I am about to buy my first 911.

After lots of deliberations I decided to go for a 997 over a 996. My intention was to go for a Carrera as it seemed a safer bet on the bore scoring front based on the research (lots of subjectiveness!).

However, I've located a couple of very interesting 3.8 S examples that fit my criteria and this is where I need your help please.

The car I am most interested in has just been serviced by OPC Cardiff and I have the 111 point check report. If the car has any bore scoring symptoms do we think the OPC would have picked up on this / noted it in the report?

Many thanks in advance.

Simon

Don't expect the OPC to have made any specific checks for bore scoring.

Thanks, so do you think a clean 111 point check is no real comfort in respect of bore scoring/associated symptoms?

The beauty of the 111-point check is that if it passes, you can buy a Porsche warrantee (even if you didn't buy the car from them).

The warrantee can be worth its weight in gold - my 110k car has had about £12k of work on the warrantee, which cost £1900 for 2 years. They even replaced the gearbox because the synchromesh failed on 2nd gear - after 100k miles.

You can buy the warrantee up to its 14th birthday or 125k miles -at the time of taking out the warrantee.

If it hasn't passed the check, and the vendor can get a quote for that work, then it might still be worth going through with it.

Thanks! The car is an 06 on 114k miles so I could just sneak in!

The other thing to note is, like mine, the car needs to be 'Porsche spec' at the time of the warrantee. Once you have the warrantee (1or 2 years) you can do what you want. The stereo comes to mind...

To re-warrantee it, you would need to return it back to Porsche spec again... but since I (and probably you) won't be renewing, you can go ahead and do what you want with the car.

Not if you wish to make a claim on it you can't, 'So sorry sir it's not standard so you have voided the warranty"

My OPC are ok with it as long as the fault is not related to your mod. I have grilles in my bumper, for example. They are happy to look at the condenser leak for me under the warrantee.

Most of the work I have had done has been with these grilles in situ - which will have to come off for the 111 check!

I wouldn't touch a Gen 1 3.8S without a bore-scope, regardless of who I was buying it off. It's alright saying you can put a Porsche warranty on it but even that would be a headache if the engine was scored. What level would Porsche say that the scored engine breached their warranty conditions? When its burning more oil that the amount stated in the manual? :dont know:

I think as its your first 997 I am in agreement with Alex for the cost of a Borescope you really shouldn't consider the car without having that done, Then based on findings get the Warrantee on it , you must have owned the car 90 days for you to get the OPC warranty yourself so get it put on the car as part of the deal . :thumb:

Opinions may vary, but in my humble opinion, the 3.6 is marginally the safer option.

Get a score scope check regardless...and just enjoy driving whatever get..

....try to avoid the Porsche paranoia once you've got your car.

Good luck.

Thanks Alex and all.

I am having a PPI carried out tomorrow, including a borescope.

Speaking to the specialist they suggested they have only seen scoring on 4-6. Would you guys recommend paying extra to scope 1-3 also?
