Puncture - do I need to replace both tyres.

I had a rear puncture that couldn't be repaired so they fitted a new tyre exact same brand.
Is there any issue fitting a new tyre on the same axle as a part worn tyre and if so how much difference in tread is too much.

What are the potential issues?

I have searched, honest.

really good question. I have a spare from the last incident in my shed in prep for the next incident and its 4.5mm of tread. I'd use it with a new one, but if it was less than 4mm i wouldn't, If that makes sense... I'm thinking a 2mm differential is ok :)
 
Other than not winning a concourse competition, you're pretty safe. You won't damage the car and you're unlikely to be able to detect the difference in driving it.
 
If they are N rated then you need to fit the same .. not good to have an N rated on one side and a non N rated the other .

Porsche states no more than 3mm difference in tread side to side.

They're not porsche rated as such but they are top quality correctly rated tyres. What happens if the tread difference is more than 3mm mate do you have any idea. I'm not sure what the difference is and I don't have the car at the moment.
 
The tyres will handle differently, you may or may not notice this. They will also have different a rolling radius so they will rotate at different rates, this can affect the diff and PSM.

Further to deMort's comment, you should not mix any different tyre spec on the same axle, especially on a high performance car.
 
In addition to the above. if you have an agressive LSD then the car will not be as it should. You WILL notice!!!

Last week on a spirited run the right rear sounded like a knackered CV joint.
It turns out it's a spring off one of the brake shoe retainers had pooped off and was randomly catching in the brake shoe. This is the second time I've had this happen on the same wheel. I was wondering if I'd got too much difference in the rolling circumference but when I checked the tread depth there's not that much between the two.
When it happened last time I was on the M1 and the handbrake started banging and I thought the prop was going to drop off.
Anyway, thanks guys for the help.
 
Thats a little worrying as this should not happen and can cause a lot of damage when it does .

i assume new springs have been fitted to the shoes ?

When adjusting the handbrake shoe then do it up tight then wind it off 3 turns with a screwdriver .. these cars dont like the shoes being too close to the drum .

i would also have a good look at the drum part .. any badly rusted spots which could cause a high spot and grab the shoes and it needs a good sanding down .

When it happened last time it was done by a recognised Porsche specialist and they fitted new parts. This time I've taken it to my local garage that I've used for my other cars for the past 20 years. They've fitted all new parts again.
 
It's rare to happen once .. to happen twice though .. hmm ..

If a customer said this to me i would be checking it in fine detail to try and find a cause .

All i can say is we had a run of three Boxsters in a month .. slightly different but basically the same thing as yours and on two of them it destroyed the hub .. one of them locked the wheel solid .

Only three though.

Perhaps point it out to your garage .

Some things worry me ... it may well be fixed now as it was human error the first time ..

But .. i always point out what i think regardless .
