Get it rebuilt.
Don't fall for the 996 replacement
There's a few reasons why they're not so good.
Rebuild will be far better
Get the back of the car up on decent stands and take your time.
If you need a special short spanner or socket then buy it.
It won't be impossible
any reason why the 996 replacement is not preferred?
I'd like to know this, too, please... (what are the few reasons?)

me too.. seems better to me on mine... old one stashed of course cos

having actually fitted one, and having had both off the car to compare, I can't see a reason to not see this mundane electrical device like you would a more modern battery and replace with a slightly revised model. they are both made by bosch of course, but understand if perfect originality is your thing then it might not be the way to go.... but then don't be upgrading those old bulbs etc... :)
