My '95 C4 is making a mysterious whining/screeching noise at cold start. The noise lasts about 10 seconds and if I touch the window or sunroof switches there is a slight increase in the noise. First guess was the AC converter belt but after tightening it at a local specialist the noise still persists exactly as it was.

Also when I start driving there is another screeching sound which comes only when driving with a gear selected. If I push the clutch down the noise disappears. This noise last for about the first 200m after cold start and then goes away.

Both noises appear only when starting the engine cold, even after the car has been standing for a few hours it starts normally without any issues or strange sounds, so these sound only appear with the 1st start of the day.

Also both noises started to occur at the same time a few weeks ago, so I'm wondering if they could be related.

Any idea what might be the source of these noises? All thoughts are very much appreciated.

To me it sounds like a dry bearing (although I can't hear it). From your descrition I would suspect the spigot bearing in the flywheel but tbh it could be anything. The altenator belt sensor is common and the CCU fan.
Most Fords around here screech from cold and that's caused by a loose fan belt.

If it’s not the wife/girlfriend it could be the alternator bearing as it sounds like it occurs when the alternator would be under load.....

Thanks for the quick responses! Luckily my GF's whining noise is so not easily mistaken as a dry bearing screech Very Happy

I'll check the alternator bearing and the belt sensor next. I'll also talk with the local specialist about the spigot bearing, let's see what they think.

Thanks again for the suggestions, will let you know how this proceeds!

My money is on the alternator bearing.

I would suggest getting it sorted asap.

I didn't get mine sorted before a European trip as the noise was intermittent and the bearing seized when I was in the Alps and did quite a bit of damage to the fan belt and fan belt pulley.

I had to be trailered to an OPC in Bolzano where I spent a very nice unplanned weekend but the repair at the OPC even with Classic car discount wasn't cheap ...... no not cheap at all ...... nooo

One lives and learns ......

Ouch! Thanks for the heads-up. I'll definitely get the alternator bearing checked out immediately.
