DIY Power Steering Pipe Replacement 997 C2S

My power steering failed while in Europe with a split pipe that doesn't just drip but comes straight out when filled. I have the part numbers and image of the pipes in question. After searching the forum I've not found any threads that me help with a DIY job. Any help appreciated. Porsche Stuttgart quoted 600E for the parts and 3 hours labour. Questions;
- one pipe is split but Porsche recommend replacing both? Correct?
- Are these Porsche only? Could I have braided hoses made instead?
- any threads/advice with the actual work involved appreciated

I'm not sure if this is the usual problem the 996 suffer from .. i hate trying to work out parts from PET!

it looks like the low pressure pipe has split and separated .. this can be pushed back into place and a jubilee clip used to secure it .

As it's the low pressure pipe then that's all that's needed .

Either way .. if you email me i can send what info i have on replacing pipes for these .. i'm not sure if they are the correct instructions but i can send you what i have .

EDIT .. just to say i'm amazed this didn't ruin your pump .. i thought a leak would do this as it does on a 996 .

I would recommend taking the assembly to your local PIRTEK centre (tell them you was referred by Lee Tubb (me) I'm the recently ex-owner of PIRTEK Thurrock), PIRTEK make replacement hose assemblies and I personally would either myself or oversee staff make replacement power steering pipes several times a week. There's a lot can be done and a number of ways to do it.

Low pressure side (as stated above can easily be replaced with cotton braid hose (100R6) and high pressure can also be replaced.

Prices vary depending on what needs doing but I've charged as little as £30 for simple repairs.

Hope that gives you another option!

Nice one chaps. I will send a photo once I get the trays off etc and can see the split. We've got a Pirtek here in Swansea, that's who I was planning to go to.

Finally got the time to investigate the problem and it seems, so far as I have got, that the pipes are not the issue but the rubber hose connecting them above the subframe. Where this hose joins the 2 pipes it is crimped on to the end of the pipe and the crimps in both sides are shot. Looks like this will hopefully be a diy repair for the price of 2 jubilee clips.

That's what happens on the 996 and a jubilee clip works just fine as a repair .. as long as it's the low pressure side .

I'd read the 996 issue but thought it was a split in the pipe. Pretty disappointing that the Porsche Centre in Stuttgart suggested the rigid pipe needed replacing when it was the flexible one with the issue :thumbdown:

All fixed for the cost of 2 jubilee clips as the other end was also showing signs of cracking.

OPC .. hmm .. yeah .. i can't really comment there as i think i have enough in the past

Tell you what i am surprised about though .. they said you can drive it with no fluid .. i always assumed that would kill the pump .. i've replaced a few over the years due to noise and low fluid so that did amaze me .

I learnt something anyways .. and that's rare
