Newbie - 991.2 Carerra 4 GTS purchase - looking for advice

Hey folks, this is my first post (I think  ) on this forum, I also posted on Rennlist but that seems to be more North American biased I thought I'd ask a bit closer to home! Sorry for the dupe if you read both forums!

I'm about to take the plunge into 911 ownership having loved a 981 Cayman GTS for 3 years. I loved the 981 GTS, but I needed a sports car with back seats for the kids (usual story I imagine!)

Anyway, I have agreed a deal with Porsche Center Stockholm to buy this stunning Carmine Red Carerra 4 GTS (MY18) with 15,000Km on the clock, subject to a test drive (where I can pull out if I don't like anything).

It is really well optioned for the most part and has been used throughout the winter which is quite unusual in Sweden, so the dealer has done some respray work to the front, repairing a wheel and replacing all 4 tyres.

My question is, as I have never owned a 911 or had much experience of the 991.2, is there anything I should look out for or any watch outs that could be costly in the short/medium term?

I'm buying on finance and expect to keep it for at least 3 years. Under the dealers advice I plan to PPF the car for the winter, likely Suntek Ultra I think. I'll also be getting a second set of wheels for winter to save swapping tyres on the beautiful wheels.

Here's the options (translated from Swedish)

  • Carmine Red
Alcantara package GTS Black / Carmine Red in combination. with GTS interior package
Tinted rear windows Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur
    SportDesign package Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur
Headlight cleaning nozzles varnished Porsche Exclusive Manufacure
Side skirts lacquered Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur
    Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) including PASM sports chassis (20 mm lower)
    Rear axle steering
    Power steering Plus
    Aluminum wheels 20-inch 911 Turbo S
LED headlights in black incl. Porsche Exclusive Manufacture Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS +)
    Windshield with gray-toned top
    Automatically dimmable rear-view mirrors
    Cruise control
    Lane Change Assist
ParkAssist (front and rear) with reversing camera
    GTS interior package
Multifunction steering wheel with steering wheel heating
Adaptive Sports seats Plus (18-way electric)
    Heated chairs
    Smoker package
Storage net at the foot space on the passenger side
ISOFIX mount for car seat front
    BOSE® Surround Sound System

Any thoughts, suggestions or comments are welcome please?

it's a ton of money and I don't have anyone who can come to assist with the drive & collection, although it will get a good test if I buy it as I will be driving the 400Km between Stockholm & Gothenburg to take it home

That said, I'm not super OCD and as the car's still under warranty until Jan next year I'm not worried about warranty items, but anything that I might not of thought of or may end up costing a lot after the warranty expires are my main worries.

Thanks in advance!

Edd

Here's some pics - couldn't make the attachment work on the first post!

You should be ok as the Porsche warranty is very comprehensive. Just check that warranty work can be done by your local OPC, which it should be.

Car looks great - enjoy the drive home :)

Edit, if they are centre lock wheels, you will be paying a lot for winter wheels, and need a special tool to swap them over yourself. You may want to consider asking the hubs to be changed to convention 5xbolt. Centre locks will also limit where you can get new tyres fitted during ownership. And black wheels show tyre fitting damage easily.

There's a known issue with faulty water pumps on the 991.2, that I found out to my cost after just over 4K miles in my C4 GTS, so it's worth getting the OPC to check this before you take delivery, especially after 15K miles.

Other than that you'll love it. I spend as much time in mine as I can.

Thanks both, yeah the warranty does help and it sounds like they are doing a lot of prep and checks pre-sale.

I will ask about faulty water pumps for sure - thanks for that tip.

And yeah, the centre locks look ace but I probably wouldn't have chosen them if I was speccing the car from new - just for your points. I have done some research though and you can pick up complete wheel/winter tyre sets for a reasonable amount - so I can do a complete swap at winter time.

I do need to find some tyre fitters who can change them though :)

Didn't even know I could ask for the hubs to be changed - it is probably too late for that sadly :(

Cheers

Edd

that looks stunning :thumb:

Carmine Red what a colour

as mentioned there are a few issues out there but nothing serious and with the Porsche Warranty nothing to worry about

the main challenge are IMHO are the electronics that either work a charm or you can get unlucky, so dont leave any electrical issue too long

that is the only niggle ive had with my 991 and the pain of changing wheels with centre locks

Excellent choice of 991.2. Getting the PPF'ed is a smart choice.
When you switch to winter tyres worth seeing if they have it in a smaller wheel size but that might not be an option with the Centre Locks.
Just enjoy.

Thanks people, I can't wait to see it in the flesh on Friday!

RE winter wheels from research it looks like the 19's might be a too different offset sadly, even though the centre bore is the same, so current thought is a set of the 991 turbo s wheels which are slightly less wide at the back, so should work better than the standard wheels.

If anyone has experience of getting a 19 inch winter wheel to work on a GTS let me know!?

And regards the centre locks, do you find the bigger chain tyre fitters to be better or more specialist places?

Sweden is much like the UK on a smaller scale, you have your Euromaster types and then smaller places....

Cheers

I can't remember where I got the information from but I *think* that 19" wheels on the GTS don't play well with RAS, which you have...

Thanks Ed, I read that too so reluctantly I'm looking at 20" Turbo S wheels - which are a pinch at about £4k for a set with used winter tyres. Gulp.

On another note I flew to Stockholm to collect the car on Friday and had a bit of a rollercoaster. The reveal and test drive went well - I'm happy that while a firmer ride of he GTS (PDCC & PASM -20mm) than the Cayman GTS (PASM) it is acceptable and as noted elsewhere the secondary ride is very good.

Anyway, the owner was well known to the dealer and they stood by the history of the car so I did the deal with a couple of small extras and was ready to drive away when...

10 mins down the road I got a yellow engine warning light that said to contact a dealer but you could still drive it. So after much shenanigans I got a loaner Macan S for the drive home and the dealer is fixing a lambda sensor this week and driving the car to me at the weekend!

I guess it was lucky the warning didn't come up halfway of the 500Km drive home on a Saturday so I'm thankful for that.

Will post some better pics when I have her properly but for now here's a couple from the original collection :)

Cheers

Edd

Pics from the collection room and also outside, where it was a bit wet - obviously :)

Congratulations on doing the deal.

That's a bummer about the lamda! You're right though, a good thing it happened near the dealer.

Such a stunning looking car. The 991 has really grown on me in recent months.

I hope they transport the 911 to you and collect the Macan. I wouldn't be happy if they expected you to drive it back to them.

Loving that colour! Welcome to gts ownership. Hope you enjoy when you get your hands on it
