I''ve just bought the cheapest 911 in the UK!

I saw the 'UK cheapest 911' thread on Pistonheads and it got me thinking, a low end 996 for £6,500 is mighty attractive proposition.

I came here to read up a bit more on 996's and found this thread, and saw the comments about the price of 996's.

Strikes me that the many trade sales around £10k to £12k must have been bought by the dealers at what? £7k? £8k? Its easy to think looking at the market that there's no sub £10k 996's, but that's clearly not the case.

I would not want Cabriolet and I couldn't live with cream or grey leather.

I'd prefer a manual box and a coupe, but if a cheap enough car came along I'd compromise on those.

Just need to find it.

Yes, it was an impulse purchase, but I've wanted a leggy 996 for a while. There's just something about a well used 911 that appeals to me. I don't need to worry about originality, or preserving its value, I can just drive it, and hopefully not very often, fix it. I blame Jethro Bovingdon and his high miler, and that Pistonheads(?) article about the 996 used as an express delivery truck for race parts a few years back.

Yes to all of those things! I'm about 8 weeks ahead of you in the impulse buy stakes and it's good to know that I'm not the only one who buys cars without driving them first!! :)

I'm hoping more and more people will follow our example...once we prove they won't fall apart and burn a 911 size hole in our wallets that is!! Congrats and good luck!!

I wanted a 3.6 996 C2, manual, no sunroof, definitely not silver or blue, and definitely not the grey interior. And yet, here I am with a 3.4 C4 in silver with the grey :lol:

All the best with the purchase REV.

MOT history seems to show brakes and tyres need sorting. I would imagine that will include the brake lines. Be interesting to see its service history and who and what the engine rebuild comprised of. At £8K it should leave a bit of a fighting fund to sort.

Unless you're in 'the trade' the only place to pick up these cars at £7k-£8k is at auction (real or on-line). For that you'd need to be very brave and recognise that the car could very soon cost you double that amount.

There's normally a very good reason why such cars are not being retailed.

You could be right, but I'm happy to replace consumable items like that. I plan on keeping it forever* so I'd have to do them at some point.

Having said that, I am hoping the owner didn't do another 7000 miles after the MOT on tyres they'd been told where close to the limit. From the pictures, it's on Michelin tyres which I'm telling myself is a sign that the previous owner wasn't afraid to spend some money on it at some point.

*or until I get bored

I did speak to a specialist of good repute who said he's taken trade ins at 8k and has then spent time and effort getting them ready before selling them at 14 to 16 with a warranty....I'm not sure what to make of dealers selling them at 10k
 
On a separate note, was parked in a supermarket car park when the car was covered in bird poop and someone pulled up in a 991 and said 'mate, your car is a disgrace"...I was enraged but, at the same time had to agree :|
 
I tend to wash my cars every 6 months whether they need it or not so I'll prepare myself for abuse :lol:

Ha! Longest I've gone is 12 years on my old MG. My wife bought a brand new Golf R and that went 2 years before it's first wash...why wash when you can be driving is what I say :)

That's fine, I'm a very capable DIY car owner with a lot of tools and equipment to work on cars.

My last 911 was a 3.0 SC I bought with a rod hanging out of number 4 and I rebuilt that engine myself and got it running, then replaced it with a 993 non vario engine, went like a scalded cat then.

They way I see an entry level 996 is that as long as I get a 98/99 car with the dual row IMS then its a pretty safe buy.

If it needs, tyres, discs, pads, a few bushes, a silencer, pair of rads and a window motor I'll have it done for a couple of grand. So I'm a bit 'whatever' about buying a car needing work.

What I don't understand is why some 98/99 cars are advertised as having an upgraded IMS, its not clear why a car with the double row bearing would need that?
