MaxA's ''Mr White'' long termer

nice

always amazes me that no matter how white you think your car is put it next to fresh snow and it looks almost dull white or cream.

Agreed, the Carrara white is definitely creamy (and in these pictures it has a layer of ice across the front and a layer of road grime over the rear). And it wasn't a nice sunny day. My wife's Candy White GTI also looks less than icy white in the snow.

I'm back on the Michelin summers/OZs again ... and with only 4.5mm/5mm at the rear, I fear that it may only be this season before I need a new set of boots. :what:

I washed the car, but now it seems that a brake light seal has failed and there's condensation in the right rear. I need some pointers on how to remove the light, how to take it apart, how to dry it and how to reseal the lens (if possible). And reinstall the offending article. :dont know:

There's a separate thread on the light, but over the weekend, I removed it, separated the two halves, dried it out and reinstalled it again. Hopefully it'll stay dry.

I also removed the MAF sensor and cleaned it with some sensor spray, but I still have a CEL. If it doesn't go away after a longer drive, I'll have to change it, I suppose. I think it might be contributing to the occasional stall.

The drivers door window isn't dropping and rising properly either, although it did seem to get better. I'll have it looked at over the summer.

Hopefully there are no more niggles...

... and I need to get the Function First gearbox mount inserts, um inserted. Should tighten up the drivetrain a bit. Maybe it'll eliminate that thunk as the PDK changes down into first in Sport/auto mode.

I think I need A List of Stuff To Do.

My coolant has dropped below the minimum mark but there are no leaks that I can see anywhere. It can't still be an airlock after 18 months can it? :dont know:

I'm hoping to join a private track day (track morning?) at Alastaro on the 27th: a couple of other Porsches and some exotics. Let's see.

I made it to the Alastaro Circuit to join an eclectric group for a two hour slot: there was a 996.1 Carrera manual, a Boxster (the last flat six version, don't know the codes), a 991.2 C2S, an SL500 (!), a 330 convertible (!!), and a Mustang Mach1 fastback built for historical racing with space frame chassis, full cage, semi slicks, front mid engined 480bhp V8, manual gearbox. And a grey Ferrari 430.

It was pretty cold on arrival at just 12c and very damp, and we spent the first couple of sessions just relearning the track and trying to create a dry line. The track was very greasy and slippery and still didn't really warm up when the sun came out. I've never had the car move around so much, except on snow of course. I needed to drop some tyre pressure to get any meaningful grip. But we still had a lot of fun.

It turns out that a 470?hp Ferrari is 'catchable' (in that I soon caught him up), but I didn't get close enough to get past safely. He had more speed on the straight. I didn't have the GoPro installed which was a shame, as now none of you believe me. And a Mach1 is incredibly quick, especially when it's on a flying lap: and it sounds like a low flying Spitfire. Truly scary. My other observations revolve around the 996 and 991: the 996 is still a fast car in committed hands, but pretty loose (the owner spun it twice during my passenger lap!), and a 991.2 is also fast (so it should be!), but not noticeably quicker from the trackside - probably because it was the new owners first time out in any 911. I'll post a couple of pictures.

Next time, however, I'll want some warmer tarmac. :thumb:

This morning I noticed a spluttering, hissing squeaking noise from the left front. As it happens, I was on the way to a local indy in Helsinki (called 9xx) to have them sort the drivers' side window (it's not been dropping properly) so I asked them to have a look at the rad (for stone damage?) and also the dodgy MAF sensor. I suspect an uinwelcome bill is coming...

Of all the expressions I hate from a garage it's got to be "we're just waiting on the parts". Apparently there is a backlog of orders for the door lock mechanism and the last batch of ten were all wrongly packaged. Not their fault of course but I need to get back out and drive...

Working my way through your thread as I came near the end I noted that you mentioned the sound of a low flying Spitfire, which caused me to remember this clip...

word of WARNING... please do not open it if the "F" word offends.

Excellent. I think I might have sworn a bit more. That plane couldn't have got any lower can it?
