Damp/Weeping Oil Tank - Urgent?

Hi

Reported at its recent service. Its weeping from the rusty seam. How urgent do you think this is? Its not at the point where it is dripping onto the garage floor yet.

Keep any eye on it and plan for the service next year or do it now?

Mine was weeping at the sender gasket. If it's the tank itself try a good epoxy based paint. Replacing the tank is a real pain.

The specialist are sure its the leaking through the seam. Would paint really stop the leak? Are these things under pressure?

No pressure, when the engine is running they are under a slight negative pressure as there are vent hoses going to the inlet manifold.
Steve Strange @ Douglas valley has a good looking oil tank on ebay looks very good value for them. £1200 + from porsche.

Set up an ebay saved search and wait for a really good tank to crop up while keeping an eye on the leak, once you have new tank in hand pick up all the other bits needed to swap it out.

Make sure you really really clean out the replacement tank, best one would be out of a crashed car rather that one that had an engine go pop.

At £1200 for an oem tank, I would look at getting someone to make an aluminium or stainless steel replacement.

Have you seen the shape and the insides of a 993 oil tank?

Damn good advice! I dont want pieces of metal pumping around the engine!

The pipes are a real sod to get off and the filler pipe even more to get back on.
21 and 25 on the pet. Took several attemps and much cussing.
Good advice about the tank flush.

Pls do NOT use a second hand oil tank. They are not simple internally and if contaminated you simply cant clean them. You then run the real possiblity of sending dangerous debris into the motor.... :nooo:

Speak with Johnny U11 when he is back next week, he can get you sorted well below OPC prices.
