My first 911 (C2 gen1)

This months Porsche club magazine was accompanied by a "go racing" pamphlet, which caught my interest. The novice category is a choice of cars, one of which is the 2.7 litre Boxster - which you can buy for relative peanuts.

I was considering looking into it once we've got the engine/gearbox/ECU project over the major investment hump, as it sounds like fun.

Just bought this for a banger rally from Cornwall to Pompei, if it
survives fancy stripping it out and doing some
track days just for fun. Off to BTCC next week
at Thruxton to get some tips! Hope there's
a pamphlet for an old bloke with a Volvo!

What series did they suggest? The 2.7 I drove was a peach that liked to rev. I'd like to end up racing something like a Boxster and Enduro-ing it. To get started and my Nat A, I've picked the C1s and KAs. They're about the cheapest way you can get seat-time and experience. They're also great fun.

DO IT! Thruxton is mega :D.

A couple of laps driving a friend of Ed and mine's e46:

I was quicker in the Clio, even quicker again when we did it a year later with Circuit days and they didn't use MSE's random cone-ing!!! Thruxton my fav UK circuit (I've probably mentioned that before... Stuck record :D)

Quicker again, despite a monsoon, in my friend's e46 m3 clubsport. That car is DIVINE! Indicated 150 down the back straight and no time to look at the speedo through church. This car is a beast!!!!!!

The cars look like great fun!
My last visit to Thruxton was a while back in
this car, a good day out and yes brilliant track
with epic back straight, I enjoyed it more here
than at Brands probably because I was in this
and not a Kart!

No idea how fast they were or lap times plus they were limited on the revs so was bouncing off the speed/rev limiter on the back straight but it felt quick and the handling/braking was great.
It seemed and felt like it was all over the back of the instructors in Mazda RX8s but ultimately ran out of puff on the straights to have enough for overtaking. Bloody good fun though and definitely flattered your own driving ability. Probably not as fast as that Clio!

Console delete turned up today! Going to try and find some time to get this installed, the stereo in and fix the climate display...

Slight delay in fitting the console delete kit, fixing the climate controls, and installing the new stereo... I'm off to the 'Ring for DN21 :D. In a Swift rather than the 911 (boo). Wasn't planned or expected, a proper bonus :D.

DN21 was mega! After 3 years out it was amazing to be back. Oh, man have missed it! Managed 4 dry laps, then the heavens opened, and 8 more in a mix of mildly moist to monsoon. 27 overall, shared with my other drivers. Also managed a couple of pax laps in a 992 C2S. Seriously impressive bit of kit.

Jochen took some awesome pics.

Now back and hopeful for some time over the bank holiday to get cracking on some 911 bits. As it was such a nice evening last night I took my dad out for his maiden voyage and to do an urgent nappy run!

Very practical shopping car!

Liking the 17s, the ride is much better and the PS4s seem great.

Yes, it needs a clean!

Driving the 911 barefoot is interesting, because the brakes aren't the best and the throttle cable requires additional care and attention, it's the nearly-classic-car experience I was after turned up to 11 :D.

Parked for a takeaway collection...

Bonding with the car and getting used to how it likes to be driven. The new RARB and tyres have made a significant difference. While still sceptical of the stiff RARB setting, it's a lot less edgy than it was with a poorly RARB (OK, no connected RARB) and disagreeable tyres. This translates to having more fun in corners and starting to lean on it further. Still much harder to drive than a friend's Cayman S, it affords fewer liberties. The throttle pedal requires both commitment and sensitivity, and the weight over the rear wheels doesn't offer the confidence of the Cayman on corner entry.

An ex-biker friend, not overly into cars but with an imminent Performance Model 3 delivery, asked for a pax to collect our takeaway. Bearing in mind it's only 5 miles away, we were out for half a tank of fuel and just over an hour. He described it as 'visceral' and didn't expect it to be as fast or corner as quickly as it did. From a man who takes pleasure in ridiculing all I do, this is high praise! He also approved of my local test loop, a mix of A and B roads. A loop Edh has also done part of with me paxing in his lovely 996 C2 gen 1.

Date night with another friend (6ft 4) and his wife proved there is loads of room in the back for passengers... Ish...

And, to bring an end to my rambling update, my friends had a GT3 CS in and took the opportunity to weight it.

38KGs heavier, and mine had more fuel in when weighed.

Made the decision to not take our little one out until she is 2. I can't find a rear facing seat setup that will work. That's a personal decision and others do, not judging at all.

All suggestions for seats greatly appreciated. It's only a few more months to wait.

When I do take her out it will be for fun no pressure drives only. Likely to get coffee/ice cream (to be consumed outside of the car!). The more she likes it the easier it is to keep the 911 in the 'fleet'.

Edit: To clarify no pressure... I mean no time pressure, e.g. I wouldn't use it to take to her swimming class or anything with a time we have to be there or back.

Pic of 992 C2S from DN21 (mandatory spotted Jochen double thumbs up)

Managed a couple of hours on cars today to fit the below...

Black console delete kit purchased from Gurt at Carnewal - http://www.carnewal.com/products/996/p96022/Console-Delete-Kit

A very kind Dammit gave me a stereo upgrade after taking pity on the disco that came in my 911! -https://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/products/continental-cdd7418ub-or.html

And, a replacement Climate Control LCD screen purchased from Part Works - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Display-...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

All fairly easy to do, guides below. The console delete saves a little weight, stops some rattles, gives me more leg room (6ft 1 and I like to sit quite close to the wheel) and makes it more GT3-esque (literally, that's where the kit comes from). The stereo sounds vastly better and even has phone and bluetooth audio. And, finally, the climate control screen I need to redo and clean the board better. An improvement and it all works, but needs redoing to be 100%. With that done, and a good clean, I'll take some better pics.

Thanks again Dammit!!! It makes a huge difference!!! I'm not going to miss the DISCO.
