Wattso, congrats on the 997. you seem to be approaching ownership in a realistic and sensible way .

re the SSK if you find it too short and a bit notchy then consider fitting the GT3 shifter its not short but it does have the metal bushes giving it a rifle bolt action feel that may be more the shifter feel your after.

look forward to following your progress

Dont forget if you do go Topgear valved exhaust forum members get 10% discount off the advertised prices.

Hi Phil,

Quite set on the idea of a gt3 997.2 shifter now after having read a lot about it. Gave Porsche centre Chester a ring and it's 270 + vat, only thing is it's special order from Porsche so no idea when it will arrive.

TopGear is lower down on my list at the moment, but maybe one day!

Cheers

I seem to remember that car already has a short shift kit fitted?

It does, I'm not convinced I like it though. Prefer the boxster shift feel to be honest :dont know:

So I've just gotten off the phone with Tobias from HARTECH for the news I've been waiting for since buying the car.....

There is no borescoreing at all, they're absolutely fine! I was always confident after Baz had previously commented on the PPI pictures however I wanted to put the issue completely to bed and allow HARTECH to use their own equipment etc to inspect directly. They even commented that the car drives really well and the engine is really strong "a great car" :D

The car also had a major service including spark plug change whilst at HARTECH and I'll be picking it up tomorrow!

Also ordered a GT3 997.2 shifter from Porsche centre Chester, after being told a couple of weeks ago that they couldn't estimate when it would arrive we were told today it would be available for pickup in 2 days!

Brilliant news that, so pleased for you:-

HE WHO DARES - WINS !

:congrats:

Two random questions:

1.My callipers are yellow, my understanding was that only PCCB callipers come yellow from factory, I assume that a previous owner must have had them sprayed?

2. One key has all the buttons for opening the bonnets and one just has lock/unlock, is that normal?

1. Correct. If you haven't got PCCBs the callipers must have been sprayed yellow after-market.

2. I've just checked my spare key and it has the same buttons as the main one but I don't know what 'standard issue' was.

ps. :congrats: on the news from Hartech. :thumb:

That's great news Wattso :thumb: :thumb:

Ah thought so, thanks for that, will have to get round to having them done standard red. I wonder if the spare key was a replacement then :?:

Thanks everyone for commenting on the good news, small cloud lifted from my mind.

Need to buy some ps4s tyres and get my new wheels on now!

It is of course quite possible that one of my keys was a replacement and the owner chose to upgrade. :dont know:

So this kinda throws into question the average PPI :dont know:

Exactly, I'm really shocked that no-one else is picking up on that? if this car was diagnosed with bore score when it's perfectly fine then how many others have been the same? making the problem seem waaaay worse than it is, and also potentially meaning that owners are shelling out £10k+ for rebuilds that aren't necessary!

Indeed, Baz from Hartech wrote a very insightful comment on the state of the industry with regard to offering borescope services. There is skill and experience needed in interpreting borescope pictures, I will make no comment on the PPI conducted on this car by another garage, but what I would say is Hartech are the ultimate authority on such matters and if I was buying a 997 that hadn't already had a Hartech rebuild I would personally only have Hartech (or OCD Porsche in Wallasey, who I trust and have a good relationship with Hartech) conduct a borescope pre purchase.

I think this is one of those 'band wagon" things. People love slagging off people or organisations that are successful and this has allowed them to attack Porsche for a situation that is bad ( mine WAS bore scored, diagnosed and fixed at Hartech) but nowhere as bad as the internet trolls would have you believe. Porsche has not helped themselves by not releasing any failure figures and almost denying that there is an issue. As Baz has said, knowing what you are looking at is key, just because you see vertical stripes in the bore, that is not bore scoring, it is the depth ( as I understand it ) that is the key part, only then will it allow oil to bypass rings etc. I have read everything that Hartech have posted on here ref this situation and obviously talked to Baz, Grant and Tobias about it and understood most of it  , it is a lot more complicated than just looking in a bore than a lot of self appointed 'specialists" seem to think. The us of a is unfortunately full of them and they of course tend to shout the loudest on the interweb. Just musing as I type, no attack on anyone but if you want the correct diagnosis of any issue, try and ensure the person you are asking IS qualified to give you the answer.
