Track Day Disaster

The distributor rebuild took longer than expected, the sun was just rising as the next day I left my garage and headed the 97 miles to Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire for a midweek MSV track day.

The engineer in me was not happy about the "no load" 5000 rpm required to pass the noise test at 97 db (standard exhaust).

With a combined driver and car age of 92 years I was not expecting to be the fastest on this or any circuit.

Overtaking on the left was by mutual consent, the slower car being advised to indicate to the right.

As the pack of Caterhams, the occasional Renault Alpine and even a Ford Sierra Cosworth (370ish BHP) circulated at a greater pace the C4 driven by myself, I soon settled into the day and moved over to let the faster cars get by on the straights.

Then disaster happened.

The indicator stalk stoped latching - I lost the ability to indicate right!

Hence to the purpose of this post - I cannot recall seeing posts on this or any other forum over the years about failing steering column switches.

I note Type 911 sell them with a 5-7 day delay at about £300 which tends to suggest that they are fast to medium selling parts.

Has any one else had this failure?

Can it be fixed by some glue and sticky back plastic or do I need to splash the cash?

Mine has the same fault most of the time now. It's a new stalk assembly I'm afraid. As you say £350 ish depending on model, and mucking about with the airbag to fit it.

mine had same problem from when I bought it. I tried several times to fix it, thinking that something simple must have broken, but ultimately I needed a new unit. make sure you order the correct one, and note that you have to swap over your own "ends" with the symbols on. connection is inside the dash and for me was only possible by removing the knee bar. fairly easy job.

Check the price with your local OPC (you can usually get a 10% 'club' discount) before buying from D911.

The reason for the 5/7 delay from the specialist supplier is because they order them from OPC then pass them on to you marked up.
If they are the same as the 944 / 964 I have a few sets used at a fraction of what you have been quoted.

Yes I agree - just guilty of "Click Bait".

Thanks very much for the offer but I ordered a new one yesterday.

jhrfc, wilsonny, maldren - many thanks for the input.

The failure of the indicator stalk unit is not as rare as I initially though.

There are even videos on YouTube showing how to replace it on a Boxster which is directly transferable to the 993.

The failed part is a small piece of plastic some 20 mm long and about 5 mm deep half of which is shown in this photo.

I do not know where the rest of it went.

Perhaps an enterprising member could 3D print one.

I have replaced the unit with a new one and it now latches and cancels as I would expect.

However for the last few years the unit has always selected but on some but not all occasions it has failed to cancel.

I speculate that this is an indication (excuse the pun) that the unit will eventually fail.

Replacing the broken lever is a difficult job, the unit is designed a s a replaceable unit

I have seen someone on Rennlist who took it apart and fixed a similar issue, but its not for the faint hearted
