Help pricing my dead 996 (and gauging interest)

Are there other things I should be considering while storing her long term like draining fluids...coolant, fuel, oil etc?

about 12 / 18 months ago,
Porsche announced 'short' engines, i.e. factory reconditioned block, crank, pistons for 996, certainly for 3.4, not sure about 3.6's
the prices were very sensible the time, circa £3/4,000

might be worth further investigation at your OPC

I think we established that the magazine article wasn't quite correct and the short blocks are £5k+ but still worth considering in some cases.

There's a thread out there somewhere.....

I would be sending emails to several Indy's , and getting like for like quotes for rebuild.

You have time on your side , so can hopefully find a smaller firm that can only work on one or two cars at a time . Clearly Hartech is the market leader, but plenty of talented repairers out there I'm sure.

I follow an Instagram account for a firm in Kent , they posted up pictures of a rebuild recently . La RosਠI think

There was a 996 engine (unfortunately I can't remember which) for sale on Facebook Marketplace with a new alternator, clutch, IMS etc for £3000 - get that fitted!

I don't have any spare 3.6l bottom ends. I have one which will become a 3.9l for my C4, a 3.2l boxster engine which will become a 3.7l for my C2, and a 3.4l spare which has a damaged crankshaft but might end up being rebuilt if I find a decent crank. I have the two original 3 4l engines in my C4 and C2. I have a complete spare 996 turbo engine and gearbox, but that would be a lot of work.

That is a normal price. I would want to hear it running in a car before buying a secondhand engine, if not from a reputable specialist.
If buying secondhand I would want to strip and replace bearings anyway. Mad not to if it is out of the car IMO.

Keep your eye out. If you need a block half you can probably get one for a few hundred quid. No use to most people. Stick it in the garage, keep watching eBay and the forum, do the job when you have the parts together.

Sounds like you have engines and parts in every corner of the house! Your other half must love it!

Yeah I'm going to be getting some quotes from a range of specialists now and then look to get the engine out and stripped ready to decide what to do next and where to take it.

Will likely get it inspected properly before taking it out as well as after so I'll know the full picture and can make a better decision then.

My hopes are to keep it long term so when its out I'll take the time to restore anything that needs doing and just have it as a long term project.
