Thank you for the positive comments all. I'll be away from the car for a few weeks so impressions and progress may be a bit delayed.

Latest update is it's booked in to Hartech on the 12 June (their earliest slot, these guys are in serious demand!) For a gold major service, this should put to bed any doubt caused by the 'other' thread. From this point i'll also have a clear way to proceed to get the car in tip top shape.

I'm also meeting a forum member on Saturday to pick up some exciting things...

Cheers Rob, I've asked Hartech to investigate the shifting specifically so i'm sure they'll let me know if they recommend new mounts :thumb:
Think there's an element of me not being used to the short shifter too, although to me at least my old 986s feels much better than the 997.

@FZP - Would love to come along to a meet, where can I find details?
 
Great looking car and it should be a relatively pain free ownership experience given the Hartech rebuild.
As you say, manual 2wd coupe for the win. 8)

The other thing I'll be doing shortly is suspension, I'll take Hartech's steer but I'm fairly confident it will need new shocks all around. I'm really wanting to maintain stock comfort and therefore I'm thinking BILSTEIN b4 will be my best bet, but happy to hear what everyone thinks, for instance if the comfort trade off is negligible vs what's gained in a different setup like b6 or other.

Also, are there any recommendations, or resources you can point me towards, for tyre choices? I don't need maximum performance, looking for minimal road noise for the motorway miles and to find the right balance in cost vs performance and comfort. Any thoughts welcome.

If I read your opening post correctly, you're thinking about new dampers, springs and anti-roll bars. This is set up. My suggestion - for what it's worth - if that if you're interested in properly sorting the suspension and chassis, you need to get over to a decent specialist (Centre Gravity would seem to be the place to go) to have your suspension 'audited': check the top mounts, arms, joints etc. for play and then source a full package, installation and alignment.

I'm not convinced for example about the stock springs: I had cracked springs on a car with maybe 6 years old and 30,000km... which I then replaced with H&Rs. I tend to want to upgrade everything when the opportunity presents. And once I knew everything else was in good shape, I got the TPC Racing 'magic box' and a good alignment.

I run Falkens all round. Cheap as chips, stick like glue & last a fair while. I find road noise various most down to road surface.
 
You can do all the suspension work you like, but it will be all for nothing If you cut a corner for the sake of a couple of £'s. I run Michelin Supersports and now have them on my family car also.
It's the tyres that translate your suspension into performance

I've heard of center of gravity and they certainly have a fantastic reputation. Indeed I'm looking at 'the works', whilst I'm happy to upgrade parts where sensible to do so my primary concern is keeping stock levels of comfort and not messing too much with what Porsche intended the handling to be on a 911.

I'm thinking that Hartech will handle the full audit as part of their gold service, I may well reach out to center of gravity for advice, parts, installation and setup. But will be dependent on their timescales etc. Thanks for the tip.
 
As an update:

I've now collected 997.1 Turbo wheels from the forum member 'uk996' :thumbs:
They'll shortly be wrapped in Michelin ps4s, they're top dollar but I've not read a bad word about them, annoyed I've just missed a recent costco promotion for £100 off a set of 4.

I should've replied to all the PMs regarding the sale of the current wheels now. Do let me know if I missed anyone, I was surprised by the amount of interest.

Two random questions:
1.My callipers are yellow, my understanding was that only PCCB callipers come yellow from factory, I assume that a previous owner must have had them sprayed?

2. One key has all the buttons for opening the bonnets and one just has lock/unlock, is that normal?


My father has taken it to 'Porsche on the proms' today if anyone is there :)
 
Wattso, congrats on the 997. you seem to be approaching ownership in a realistic and sensible way .

re the SSK if you find it too short and a bit notchy then consider fitting the GT3 shifter its not short but it does have the metal bushes giving it a rifle bolt action feel that may be more the shifter feel your after.

Quick update.

Chris at OCD Porsche fitted a new window control to fix the passenger door not always dropping when opening the handle.


He also fixed the satnav not having a signal by supplying a new sat nav disk, I still plan to get a CarPlay unit but at least it's now working properly.

The car will be at Hartech next week and after that I will get the suspension and rear brakes sorted. After a bit of research I decided to go brembo for the discs and pads, the logic being that from what I've read performance is either the same as or better than SEBRO or PAGID discs but the Brembos have the added benefit of a coating which keeps them looking good. I also believe they have better cooling technology than the others.

I had my first weekend with the car last weekend so had the chance to drive it a bit more and spend some time beginning work on the TLC that it needs. Coming from a 986 Boxster S as my reference point it certainly feels a lot quicker, especially in sport mode, which makes a great difference in terms of throttle response. What also strikes me is the refinement above the Boxster, the 997 feels like the best of both worlds in terms of refinement / usability and being a sports car, the Boxster errs more towards sports car. So far exactly what I was looking for. Although I'm reluctant to sell the boxster as it's such a special car.

As far as work on the car. I spent the weekend ceramic coating the 997.1 Turbo wheels I bought. Although they looked clean It was a huge effort to get all the tar etc off them. I began with a normal wash, followed by de-ironing and de-taring, after drying them I them prepped them for the ceramic coating by degreasing them and finally applied the coating. They look great now and it's reassuring to know they're both protected and going to be easy to clean. I forgot to take pics the whole way though but some are below:




I also spent a whole day on the interior. It was pretty painstaking but the entire interior is now hovered, carpet cleaned and conditioned, leather cleaned, conditioned, and protected. Door trim rubber treated and protected, toothpicks deployed in all sensible areas to do so.
It looks fantastic inside and the picture really doesn't do it justice.




That's it until I can next get my hands on it!

PS if anyone spots a good deal on Bilstein B4 damptronic let me know
