2004 Porsche 997 Carrera 2

PostPosted: Thu Apr 25, 2019 9:15 pm    Post subject: 3.8s Engine conundrum... Reply with quote

Hi all, have taken a shine to a lovely regularly used 997.1 C2s but am a bit confused about the engine number. The car is a 54 plate, first regd in nov 2004, but the engine number is 68604928 which would indicate that’s it’s from a 2006 model year car? There’s nothing in the history to indicate that engine has been changed, although it was rebuilt by hartech later in its life so question is what’s a 2006 engine doing in a 2004 car?

Is it possible the engine casing was found to be damaged during its rebuild?

It’s certainly possible, but it isn’t recorded anywhere on the (very) comprehensive invoice from Hartech..

Did Porsche replace it for ims failure early in its life? It still would have needed a Hartech rebuild as they replaced like for like ie. still with the original built in issues!

Are you 100% certain this engine number relates to 2006MY car?
If so you could always phone OPC and find out if they have changed the engine or Hartech if the customer supplied a new block?

Engine number 68604928 does represent a MY 2006 car.

6 = 6 cylinder
8 = revision number 8
6 = model year 2006
04928 = sequential engine number within the model year

The reason for it might be unclear but the fact is it's the latest revision to that engine and is therefore good news.

We used to replace engines due to a few reasons but IMS bearing failure was the main cause .

i suspect this is what has happened in the past but you don't have any documents for it .. this would not be unusual .. its a warranty job so the work is done , Porsche pays and there is no paper work .

54 plate is a 2005 model year .. the very first of them basically .
