OPCs - You Gotta Luv 'em

Would appreciate the collectives view on this. Major service and brake fluid two OPCs quoted and £415 difference between the two. Both definitely major services. One OPC Porsche GB owned under fixed pricing (the more expensive one) one a franchise but still an OPC...That's some difference? Oh and the cheaper one has not applied the PorscheclubGB discount yet.....

I would imagine the more expensive estimate was Guildford. When I queried why there service costs were higher than the fixed pricing detailed on the Porsche website, I was told that because they are owned by Porsche they are able to set their own prices!!

From that point forward I have used Brooklands who do adhere to the fixed costs servicing, provide the same service stamps. When Guildford is a nicer environment to drink a coffee while you wait, I'd rather save the extra £££ and buy a Starbucks.

Here's something you can ask either of them on a major service ..

Do they remove all the under trays to inspect all the pipes and body work ..

Do they remove the rear discs to check , sand down the disc and clean the handbrake shoes ..

Do they paint the wheel bolts and brake disc hubs ..

Do they wax oil all the brake pipes and anything else that looks like it needs it ..

I think i know the answer .[/quote]

I'll be asking these questions next year, but are you saying that they should be part of the major service?

Its what Indys do as part of this service .. OPC,s don't unless they have recently changed their servicing ... which i doubt .

The cost is not all about the cost .. its what is actually done that counts .

To name and shame - it is Reading....

And needless to say I will not be getting the A/C done there.

On a related note...

How much 'value' is there is keeping the service book at 100% OPC against Indy? I have Northway Porsche just up the road from me and I would rather use them - not only for the difference in cost, but because I trust them to tell me the truth!

Spot on Nigel :thumb: I've used them for 20 years. Gave them the opportunity to address it but they were not able to. Will be using others from now on.

Not surprised it's the same group structure as Guildford.

Maybe the 4 years but as long as it's a 1st rate specialist, then they have just as much value

It can be a very variable world at your local OPC in my experience.

More often than not I have found them to be fair and reasonable, certainly in attitude and approach if not necessarily in costs :D

I have found, over the years, that when it comes to diagnostics, especially on electrical items the OPC is frequently best at getting a solution whereas the Indy route is much more consistent in terms of cost and detail overall. My only caveat here is that as technicians at the OPC become less involved everyday in older cars the skill sets to work with them fade, whereas at an Indy those same skills are increasing as they do tend to see more 'mature' vehicles more frequently.
Sometimes the OPC seem to deliberately shoot themselves in the foot though when it comes to pricing out a job :bandit:

So....

981 Boxster S has failed the 111 point check because it has Zunsport grills ....

I hope they did not charge you for the 111 point check. My car was booked in but they did not go ahead as they knew at the start the grills would fail.

Interesting, my neighbour has a 997 gen1 turbo. It's always been on Porsche warranty, he was charged for inspection before renewing warranty again even though they have always serviced it since he has owned it. He's just had full service with gearbox oil change as car now 12 years old cost £1800. Of this £800 for spark plug change
I stopped using them when I had my speedster, they wanted to charge for removal and refit of under trays, these were never fitted to the 3.2 speedster. I asked at time when was last air cooled car they serviced, they could not tell me, with the quote they gave me I looked for the retraining cost for the technician, service guys weren't amused :floor:
I use good specialist who I trust now, my neighbour is looking at doing same after this warranty period runs out

I had a loan car out - so kept it overnight - went back in this morning - took the grills off myself (3 mins tops) and then they completed the 111 point check and I got the paperwork for the warranty. Had a conversation about what 'has' to be done to keep the warranty valid and what I can get done elsewhere. Also had a robust 'discussion' about them not taking the grills off themselves and wanting to sting me £273 for a 3 minute job.....

Not surprised it was Reading, if all you are complaining about is the cost then aren't you the lucky one! If my 911 brokedown outside their front gate I would call a recovery truck to take it somewhere else.

997.1 GT3 being offered for sale at OPC Chester..... with grilles fitted!!

If anyone is nearby it'd be interesting to go and see it and ask "if I buy it today is it ready to take away?"

It's possible they'll remove the grilles prior to sale and applying the warranty, but it's a bit bl00dy rich advertising a car which so obviously does not comply with warranty requirements.... Hmmmmm :?:

And one at Sutton Coldfield too... Nice to see the difference between the Zunsport grilles (black car) and the Rennline grilles (silver car) though.

Oh this is getting boring now - there's also one at OPC Mid Sussex with grilles (and pretty badly fitted ones at that!)
