Marky's 996 ownership thread.

Hi Henry. Go on, rub it in!
There's only one Mk1 in my budget but I'd need to spend a bit on it. The Parr one. Hence I'm onto Mk2s, which is no bad thing. Apart from the standard stiffer damping that is.

Hi Mark, it's sounds like you're making an assumption that a Mk2 will be a no expense proposition once purchased ?

You obviously need to buy right (a bit rich coming from me that ...) But there aren't many 996 GT3's out there that won't need some money spending on them.

As you know the dampers aren't particularly long lasting, so unless there's an invoice for new/refurbed items in the last 20k miles, it stands a good chance you'll be into a damper refurb. Whilst you're in there there's every chance you'll find the springs are corroded etc etc, and before you know it replacing the 3.2 dampers and a few bushes may have looked like a cheaper option ...

I have to say though, I've occasionally thought a really nice 3.2 or SC would be lovely thing to own, I've never actually made the leap. Go figure ...

I'm not convinced you're doing yourself any favours making "cheeky bids" over the phone, car unseen, either.
It screams "not serious buyer, more likely serious chancer".
Much better to park yourself in front of the car/salesman and make a cheeky bid when you've established there are points/faults that are worthy of a low ball offer and you can back your offer up with factual information regarding the faults you think worthy of a reduction in price.

The petrolheads nightmare!! Doesn't matter what your budget you're always that bit short of the car you really want! I always used to say 10k short of the house you want and 1k short of the car you want!
From the dealers point I don't know with Porsche's per say but a friend owns a prestige dealership and they look at making just 2k on a sale if they're lucky and then clawing more back through finance returns although they do aim to have a high turnover of vehicles but the dealer may genuinely not have enough in it to reduce it that far.

Hi Henry,

Yes to all of that and I knew as I was writing it sounded like I was implying a GT3 will be pain free and easy on the wallet, which of course it may not, however the old air cooled cars I think have more chance of throwing up some nasty bills.
The 993 in question has had rocket covers and gaskets fitted but still drops oil. I'm guessing through bolts then which is a full strip to rectify.
It has the very early stages of scuttle rot on passenger side, so that's a £1k bill. This is before you start poking around at the rear chassis legs etc.

That's just info I got from a five minute telephone conversation with the salesman while he walked around the car. Who knows what else needs doing?
Well I do actually with my secret list, so yes while I know a GT3 may need dampers, rads, suspension arms etc, rot and oil leaks usually aren't an issue yet.
I don't expect to buy anything though and not have to sink £2k into it instantly. Well apart from maybe that silver Spyder with freshly extended Porsche warranty. But where's the sleepless night, big bill fun in one of those eh?

Regarding the low ball offers, yep I fully agree again but if I have a finite amount of viewing time, there's no point in wasting it at a dealers who have no interest in taking offers. If a dealer says my offer is too low but there is a chat to be had about it then I'll go. Of the 3 cars on my list now they've all said we can talk. Parr have said that about the red Mk1 too but that's too much to fit in this weekend so it's on the reserves list if my other choices fall through.

Hi Jon, yep it's exactly that. However much we have it's never enough. My wife said that tonight about houses when I was whinging on, as we are casually looking for something else.
Is that the case though, or are we all just ungrateful and never happy? :?: :D

I always ask the dealers if the car in question is their stock or SOR. I think they'll knock more money off it's someone else's money.

Hi Neil, yep Comfort.

Pretty decent car in today's market. It was up for £75k originally.
I've just commented on Stuttgart metals wanted thread but it seems very decent with low over revs etc.

It's on my radar but only if all my Mk2 avenues close.

Up until this week I'd have said yes 100% they'll still drop, but there are a few things flying out the door it would seem. I've been blaming Brexit completely but could some of it simply have been down to the usual seasonal trends?

My mate reckons Spyders will start finding new homes in the next month or so. I can see his point as I'm a big believer in that once the sun comes out and we have a bank holiday weekend people start thinking about toys again.

Anyway no more Brexit talk. :hand:

If I wasn't building a silly engine for my 996 I'd be working out how to explain a new, red 964 to my girlfriend.

Somebody save it before it gets turned into yet another 'retromod'.

Is that John Boggiano/Rob Mugglestone's old car? I remember he had a lovely red C2 that featured heavily in the Porsche press a few years ago.

Aarrgghh! I know lads, I spotted that in the early hours whilst carrying out my almost hourly searches.

It's the only 964 that has been almost 100% suitable. Rebuild - check, good colour - check, suspension refresh - check.

It's so close yet so far though as I am limited to £50k private sale (standard bank loan) or £58k/£60k with dealer finance as there are cleverer options with the classic car specialists.

I'm consoling myself in the fact it doesn't have aircon, otherwise I'd be very very frustrated.
I'd pretty much discounted 964s as I don't want a project, a C4, a tip, a cab or a targa. Typical.
That is a perfect example of what we were talking about earlier with budget just never quite being enough. :frustrated:

Thanks for posting it anyway g911. Well I think it's thanks. :dont know:

Things like that 964 really get me buzzing. It does make me consider something like a 987 Spyder with warranty for a couple of years then push the boat out for what I really want a bit further down the line. But no, otherwise where does it all end.

One more thing, the Mint green Jasmine built 964RS rep was up at JZM last year for that exact price of £60k. 11k miles since built iirc so this highlights what a great buy that was for someone eh.
Whilst the above car is lovely Minty is like a brand new car. 8)
