Hi all how much a risk is there in buying a 2005 Carrera S tiptronic with 80k on the clock having IMS failure ?

You should be more concerned about bore-score, especially on a tiptronic Carrera S.

A late 2005 car would be less of a risk as it would have had the latest IMS bearing.

If it's an engine number after M97/01685 09790 you should be ok.

Sadly, whilst the % risk is small it's a lottery as to which cars will be in that small %.

At 80k miles on a Tip 'S' I'd be more concerned about the level of bore-scoring.

Get a ppi inspection and a bore scope check done on any vehicle you are serious about .. you can always post the bore score pictures here if needed .

As per T8 comment .. 2006 is better ... look at the chassis number .. you want 6 .

Get a borescope test at a good indi or a warranty. Failing that buy one that's had a rebuild engine from a reputable source with receipts. Plenty to choose from so be picky.
