why was there no order in the model numbers. same as the BMW's, they used to follow on (kind of) but then it went all over the place.

The Boxster/Cayman number is always 10 less - in which case, the new 911 number cannot ever be a 999 (apart from sounding strange), because there was a 989 (in 1989).

There is a possibility for a 998/988, though I assume it didn't come after the 997 maybe due to a legal reason with Ducati :dont know:

Strangely enough, the Ducati 996 was around at the same time as the Porshe 996.
