Has the 997.1 C2S bottomed out yet?

Hi,

I've been hunting for a couple of months for a 996 C4S or a 996 Anni. Keeping track of prices, I have noticed that the 996 C4S is now solidly in the following area:

  • < 60K ~£24-25
    < 70K ~£22-24
    < 90K ~ £20-22
    > 110K ~ £18-20

It occurred to me a few weeks ago that the 996 C4S is possibly performing more strongly that the 997.1 C2.

997.1 C2 rough prices

  • < 60K ~£24-25
    < 70K ~£21-24
    < 90K ~ £19-20
    > 110K ~ £17-19

My question is: will the 997.1 C2S dip down to the 997.1 C2 prices eventually? Put another way – could one eventually pick up a 997.1 C2S for about the same money as a 996 C4S with ~ the same mileage?

Or, will the 997.1 C2S strengthen with the 996 C4S, ensuring that it's always a more expensive than a 996 C4S?

As these cars age the overriding factor will inevitably be driven by mileage, condition and history. An overlap in value between 997 and 996 is to be expected.

revise title

Hi

You may want to revise the title as it says 997.2 C2S.

Which incidentally are still dropping albeit slowly as mileages increase on some cars.

re the other point - supply and demand less low mileage 996 C4S cars than 997.1 C2 cars about.

Regards
Glen Wells

You have lost me a bit Heed, as your thread title asks if 997.2 C2s has bottomed out, but your thread text asks about 997.1 c2 values.

Fwiw the 997.1 c2 is often regarded as a safer bet than a 997.1c2s as the 3.8 engine apparently is more prone to bore scoring, so values of these two models will always be similar. Condition will be the main factor.

The 996 c4s has a strong following and personally i would expect those values to stay firm especially as with the passage of time more and more of these cars will have had quality engine rebuilds.

As regards 997.2 c2s cars, i think they have further to fall in value, before they start to creep up again. Low mileage examples are in the high 40s and earl 50s and i can see them dropping from there.
Just imo
Cheers
Rick

I still think there's a bit to go with the gen 2 997. Prices are only steady at the moment because summer is very quickly approaching.

The 997.1 is still dropping in value whilst the 996 C4S still holds out. I don't look as the cars being comparable by model (C4S) of both 96/97 as the 996 4S was a castrated turbo with the totally different appearance over the standard carrera. This is not the case with the 997. Even the fatter rear end isn't as noticeable on the 997 as it is on the 996. For this reason, the 996 C4S has become more of a collector's car, thus keeping the prices up.

All the 996s and Gen1 997s bottomed out a few years ago and have since risen.

Cross-overs in values are now happening across all the 996/997 Carrera models due to mileage / history /condition / spec of individual cars.

At every price point from £18k to £25k currently there is a choice of all the cars you have mentioned.

The 996C4S may hold its value better compared to equivalent mileage/history 997s - even the 997 S cars - as it has attained modern classic status in many enthusiasts eyes.

And I guess these are all really asking prices rather than sold prices.

As a potential buyer.... I'd be interested in what a decent 80k 997.1 C2 is fetching (£18-19k?). 997.1 C4S ? £24-26k... with maybe the 997.1 C2S a little more than the C2 as it's possibly a little newer?

Whoops. Typo. I meant 997.1!

Regarding the 997.1 C2, there is quite a bit of history on carpricetracker.com, which tracks the lowest price available on PH or AT over time.

It looks like the 997.1 C2 is probably trending upwards now, as the lowest price for any advertised 997 is higher now than 18m ago.

there's a 997.1 at RSJ that's more money than the identical one I bought from 911V 5 years ago...doesn't feel like the 997.1 market is flagging to me

Very interesting data, but these figures are somewhat misleading as they are not tracking the actual sold prices :hand:

I am looking at either a 996 c4s or a 997 c2s. It's tough as I like both shapes, but the pull to a newer car is strong!
However I am only currently considering a hartech rebuilt c2s. Is there anything I am missing?

It's only the trend that is of any relevance in that data. 'Lowest price' will always equate to 'Cat Cars' or seriously high mileage examples. These values will bear no relation to the prices being asked for the cars that most buyers will be looking for.

My records show that 997 values are pretty stable at the moment. Higher than they were 36 months ago but down a bit on 12 months ago.

Your strategy is sound but you will have a very small pool of cars to choose from so will need to be open-minded about colour combo and spec'.

ps. :welcome: to 911uk

Interesting thread.

I bought my 05 997 C2S last August, and have put nearly 10k miles on it since, trouble free. One oil change has been my only expenditure (despite the engine being rebuilt by JAZ Porsche as opposed to Hartech just before me purchasing it - amazing, I know!) and looking at current prices I think I'd get my money back or thereabouts if I wanted to sell, and I can't complain at that.
