After reading Kas750's comments about having the V8 itch and also the low production of Boxer engines it got me thinking about what engine layouts I'd previously owned:

8 x straight 4
1 x flat 4
1 x flat 6
1 x V6
1 x V12

What have other members owned?

an interesting list, what is your experience of the various configurations?

Do you have the V8 urge?
 
I do like the V8, but my lad currently has a 650i V8 and it's very similar to my 850i V12 I owned, apart from the burble created by the V8. The V12 was super smooth and very very sweet.

But for the fun factor 'hooligan' feel, it's the flat 6. The flat 4 alfasud also had that feel to it. Straight 4s or the norm, but stick a turbo or supercharger on them (200sx & CLK 230) and you have something totally different from your standard. The V6 audi was a sweet engine but let down by the auto box, which just consumed too much of the power.

Best 2 engines were by far the V12 and flat 6.

I find it is more the characteristic of the individual engine than the layout. The 3l I6 in my R107 300SL is so totally different to the 3.2l I6 in an M3 CSL. Likewise the 5 6l V8 in a 560SEC is a different animal to the 5.4l V8 in an SL55. The original 1100cc engine in my old mini clubman vs the C20XE revving to nearly 8k are so different.
I would take a free revving high rpm NA engine with light internals as my favourite.

Best noise was the v8, best performance flat 6 of my current 997.

A v10 really interests me, I think they sound amazing but can't see it making on my list with the current trend of engine design and my budget constraints!
 
I've always liked cars with layouts that are different to the norm too, started with inline 4's then not looked back!

3 x inline 4
1 x narrow angle V6
3 x flat 4 turbo
1 x flat 6 turbo
1x in-line 6

Ps had a few bikes too and they've all been na inline 4's , but to be fair an in-line 4 gets the job done. The engine in my gsxr1000 is still the best engine I've ever experienced!

Never owned a petrol turbo and probably never will. Many Diesel company vehicles.

A V10 would be a nice addition to the list, for the sound a V8 or V12 can only dream about.
 
I had an Audi V6 (2.8 A4 quatro) which I replaced with and Alfa 166 3.0 V6. The Alfa engine was sounded better and ran far sweeter (and miles better than dad's contemporary Merc V6 E class).

Engines of note.........Lotus big valve twin cam Sounded wonderful (in it's day anyhow)
Jag v12 smother than a baby's bum (in top gear would go from 15mph to 150 mph) erm so I was told

Dodge v8 5.2 litre..designed in the 60's updated in the 90's with fuel injection and a block heater for the winter :eek: (and you thought plug ins were new) started first time every time for 11 years, temp between -30 and +35

1st f6 made of chocolate
2nd much better
3rd best soundtrack ever

No turbos or superchargers.........wife the only one with diesels :hand:
 
Just realised how the cars stack up over the years!

Petrols
Straight Fours = Peugeot 304, Vauxhall Chevette, Capri 2.0S carbed
Straight Fours inject = Volvo 240 GLT, Morgan +4, Honda S2000
Straight Fives = Volvo V70 T5 x 3, V70R
Straight Six = TVR Tuscan
Flat Sixes= 997.1 Carrera S, 997.2 Carrera 4S
V8 = Land Rover Discovery mk2, Morgan +8 x4!

Diesels
Straight Sixes = BMW 535d flying machine!
V8 = Cayenne S
Best engine S2000, 9000 rpm great gearbox!
Favourite sounds came from the Rover engined V8 Morgan and my 997.1 with
the Tubi exhaust. Worst engine was in my first car a Peogeot 304 but quite possibly had more fun in this car at 17 than any that followed!!!
V12 is missing so still need to tick that box.

It's a good question, but I've run mostly basic transverse-mounted fours, one inline four, one supercharged four, two turbocharged fours, three flat fours (two of which were turbocharged), and a flat six.

I think I'm at the pinnacle of my motoring life with the flat six, as I don't see any inline sixes, V6s or V8s in this life (and not in this high-tax country anyway). :dont know:

The recent turbo petrol cars have such good torque and response, they work fine as daily drivers. I'm not counting the TDV6 that I borrow on occasion, or any boat engines.

I suspect the next car in the fleet will by my boy's MX5 (an inline four), as he's just starting out in his motoring career.
