Very Heavy Clutch and Sore foot

I noticed my clutch pedal getting very heavy lately as my right foot is getting sore when in traffic.

I think it has gradually being getting worse as it wasn't a instant thing. The clutch itself was replaced about 30k miles ago. I'm not sure if the pressure plate was replaced. I got it bled out when I changed brake fluid Last year, and I commented to the mechanic that it felt different in a not too great way afterwards, but it was working, so off I went.

I though it was bad until I sat into a 2003 C4S yesterday and the clutch on that was as easy as slicing custard. I couldn't believe it. Mine is worse than I thought.

Clutch ope.ration is good apart from heavy pedal. I want to rule out the simple stuff before I consider taking out the box to check all the internals of the clutch bits

So I thought maybe the power assist spring was shot or removed, so I squeezed under the dash to have a look - what a crap position... - but the spring seems to be OK.

So my question is a man maths one - which should I do first?

A. Buy a new power spring and see if it makes any difference (which I can do myself)

Or

B. Change the slave cylinder first ( which I could do myself, but I couldn't be arsed rolling around the gravel driveway so I'll take it to a garage)

A is cheaper but may be not the problem. B is more expensive, but also may not be the problem. But which is more likely to yield results? And my foot is even sore walking now :?

Did they grease the input splines when they changed the clutch?

Another reason I do my own work.....

Mine was mega heavy when I changed it, the whole lot was dry - but it was old and worn out.

New clutch, cover, release bearing and flywheel, new slave and bled through fixed it.

Hi Wazz, there was a clutch kit fitted - bearing, pressure plate and clutch plate. It was done by TWG specialists in Peterborough- but I have no way of knowing if they lubed th splines other than the fact they seem to be a well know specialist.

I don't want to spend money on taking out the box until I have tackled the low hanging fruit - hence my dilemma of A or B

Thanks

Hi, I would try the assist spring.

Take it off and see if it's snapped in two...

Costs nothing if OK...?

Mike

I changed my slave cylinder last year and it made a load of difference the clutch pedal weight and the whole system just felt smoother.

I also changed my pedal helper spring some time ago which also made a difference.

Both worth doing in my opinion.

I think there has been at least one recall/revision re. the helper spring i.e. that one bought now could well be beefier/smoother than some early cars were originally fitted with..... whether or not that applies in your case....

- far easier place to start, although I'd probably look to do both as mentioned

I found a partial fix...

I was out walking in the rain, and the shoes that I wear mostly when driving started letting in water and had clearly served their purpose. So I bought replacements.

I haven't had a sore foot since I bought new shoes... i kid you not... and while the clutch is heavier than other cars, it's not a problem driving it with other shoes

Kinda supports the theory of starting with the simple stuff first.

I will pop out the power assist spring in the near future and replace it.

I have a part number for the shoes I bought M&S39.50 :thumb:

Adidas Dragons for me.....

I bought a Tip for this very reason drove a mates 996 c2 and knew I had to get a 911 but the clutch felt very heavy even he rarely used to drive to work because of stop start driving. Test driving be a Tip and that was it sold,,,,,

So Hartech picked up on my heavy clutch when testing the car - with a new clutch and flywheel, so they replaced the pedal assist spring (which looked ok) and hey presto - a nice normal clutch pedal again.

That could be your problem. I always use my left foot for the clutch. :D

Seriously though, Im glad it's sorted and was an easy fix. :thumb:
